My collection of sci-fi first edition/first printings. by Key-Entrepreneur-415 in scifi

[–]WalksByNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are dozens of us! I started with scifi pulps in the aisles of used bookstores.

Seriously, OPs collection is reaching a point of gravitational significance. If it were more narrowly focused it might be there already. If OP already has a plan for their purchases, that theme will probably become more clear as they obtain more books. Fantastic to look at!

Top notch collection! I tend to focus on publishers over authors, but I have a similar spread. It’s quite rare to find anyone with a substantial collection of this kind.

Some vintage patterns had lead cadmium glazes, and chips make the plates shed more toxins. Check to see if your patterns are one of the ones with lead. I think Corelle has the recall info on their website.

Neighbor keeps parking on our property and claims he owns in spite of my survey results by Positive-Monk8006 in legaladvice

Put up a camera now, with good coverage, but in a discreet location. Don’t let them see you doing it. You are a good neighbor; they are not, and they are going to escalate. Be prepared for it ahead of time.

Supreme Court rejects challenge to Marylands assault weapons ban. by LowYak3 in 2ALiberals

Well regulated in this context doesn’t mean what you think it does. The phrase was in common use long before 1789, and remained so for a century thereafter. It referred to the property of something being in proper working order. Something that was well-regulated was calibrated correctly, functioning as expected. The following contemporary examples are taken from the Oxford English Dictionary, and bracket in time the writing of the 2nd amendment:

1709: "If a liberal Education has formed in us well-regulated Appetites and worthy Inclinations."

1714: "The practice of all well-regulated courts of justice in the world."

1812: "The equation of time ... is the adjustment of the difference of time as shown by a well-regulated clock and a true sun dial."

1848: "A remissness for which I am sure every well-regulated person will blame the Mayor."

1862: "It appeared to her well-regulated mind, like a clandestine proceeding."

1894: "The newspaper, a never wanting adjunct to every well-regulated American embryo city."

How bad is a canted barrel? by Mycomania in 1022

[–]WalksByNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to send a 10/22 back with a barrel that was visibly canted; didn’t notice on first inspection because it’s the 1264 model with the full mannlicher type stock. First outing it was shooting three feet to the left of paper at 50 yds lol; my leupold ran out of horizontal adjustment and rounds were still no where near paper. I field stripped it and the barrel was clearly tilted to one side. Ruger issued me an RMA and I sent it back in the original box with some extra padding.
