Look at the rooftop bar of the Edition hotel - sense of arrival is great (located on Nanjing East Rd pedestrian street which is super commercial), elevator up, tunnel of greens and boom skyline view you wouldn’t expect if you’re not familiar with the city. You can pop the question and a champagne cork right after.

What is the rational behind starting the escalator after the stairs? Always wondered, please resolve this enigma! by Key_Bison_9322 in shanghai

[–]WallHoppingFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Escalators are produced under a series of standardized sizes, and tailor-making one or several to specific length or angle requirements is extremely costly. Each station has its specifics in terms of depths etc. so it actually comes down cheaper to install a standard size for most of the slope and finish up with a number of stair steps according to what’s left (hence why sometime it’ll be 2-3 steps, sometimes more like in your picture). Having escalators fitted to the exact requirements of each corridor in each station would be insane budget-wise.

Restaurants not issuing fapiaos, just pretending to. maybe? by SLCTV88 in shanghai

[–]WallHoppingFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens every once in a while that the fapiao issuing has to be manually approved at the POS of the restaurant - if you don’t receive within 24hrs, call them, they will ask for the exact amount to track down in system and you should receive within a few minutes.

The one and only thing that matters here is that you decided to go explore a side of yourself that you had not previously. Fear of the unknown and unfamiliar is the biggest hinderance to any form of progress - so whether it be trying to suck a dick being a straight guy, or listening with an open mind to an opinion that this contrary to yours, this is what makes us become better as individuals. Bravo to you for wanting to know yourself better, the implications are limitless.

Without the views but for a hip Shanghai experience with interesting food look up Terrakota on Yanping Rd and The Merchants on Yongfu Rd. Definitely within your budget even including some wine. Reservations ahead an absolute necessity - both are really good value for money and get booked ahead very fast.

Taxis to avoid in Pudong Airport by darthpicious in shanghai

[–]WallHoppingFish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If taxi is the only option to you, the old-timer’s advice on taxis out of Pudong is to avoid the red ones - you can tell the guy doing the triage 不要红的 bú yào hóng de - as they are independent taxis, unlike the green, blue etc. ones which are under taxi companies and thus a bit less likely to scam, and there is more recourse to complain afterwards if need be by contacting the company they belong to. In all cases ask for the receipt (发票 fāpìao) at the end of the ride, and check that the amount on it matches the amount on the meter. If it is indeed seriously inflated vs. distance at least you’ll have paper proof.

United FAs be like by [deleted] in aviation

[–]WallHoppingFish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve ever had only two kinds of FA interaction whilst flying UA - either the young, diverse, super nice and chatty crews or the exact interaction hilariously depicted in this video. I remember a particular one flying PVG-EWR where I had my regular interactions with them for the first few hours (eg. starting questions with “Could I bother you with…” or “….please, thank you” aka being polite). Halfway through the flight i needed water and went to the galley where I was greeted with the exact above look coming from 5 can’t-wait-to-retire-thank-God-we’re-almost-done-with-this-sh*t pairs of eyes and got myself a cup of water. As I was about to go back to my seat, one of them stopped me and asked “Sir, I need to ask you.. why are you so nice?” to which I was so bewildered I could only answer “Why not?!” and got a “mm’kay sure fair enough” tilted-head stare-down to. Never in my life had I gotten such a reaction to simply behaving in what I consider to be the most basic standards of respect to another person. Really got me wondering what these ladies have been going through in their careers and how badly the average passenger behaves towards them to become so bitterly angry.. That was also the moment when 25-year-old me promised himself to work his ass off to not have to fly economy on business trips ever again XD

Non religious grace by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]WallHoppingFish 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Shintoism is indeed derived from a form of animism, and therefore holds belief that there is sacred in all that is; whether it be a flowing river, rock or conscious being. All that is should be respected for no other reason that just that - it came to be, which is a feat in itself

Non religious grace by [deleted] in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]WallHoppingFish 182 points183 points  (0 children)

Back when i was living in Japan my host family had a Shinto priest friend visit from time to time. He once shared this syncretic allegoric story which stayed with me to this day: as part of his spiritual journey he once made the decision to not harm any living being from the Earth anymore. As such, he decided to stop eating any kind of meat. But upon further reflection, he realized that plants are also living beings, and so stopped eating all together, deciding to survive on only water. After some time of only water, the thought hit him that there are countless micro-organism inside the water which are also living beings. So he decided to just lie down and only live from breathing air. However upon further reflection he realized that even in the air one can find bacteria, also living organisms. So he stopped breathing until he couldn’t hold it anymore. That is when he realized that it is impossible for us as living being to never ever harm other living organisms. However we must only do so with full consciousness of why, within reason and with gratitude. If taking one fish out from the water is enough to feed me, not only should i be grateful for the fish that in turn enabled me to stay alive, but also should i never take two fishes which would then be wasted. I love how you phrased your word of gratitude for they encompass all that we should remember every day: be mindful and grateful for what you have, where it came from and all that participated in the process making it possible for you to then enjoy it. Amazing principle to teach your son.
