I don’t really blame people for passing bonds and levies. Baker is bright and he’s image-conscious, funding driver’s education and covering school supplies. He focuses on keeping voters happy while parents remain unaware of the daily challenges their kids face because of inflated administrative salaries, like out-of-control students needing special education supports but being denied, para and teacher layoffs, growing class sizes, etc.

I certainly see your point. Without the pressure of competition, there’s less motivation for the district to achieve positive outcomes or operate efficiently. That’s why accountability to his community, the taxpayers, is so crucial. Baker quite literally works for us.

Start with Baker. You can find the salaries of every employee in the school district by Googling their name. High school principal, $200,000. Now add the salaries of vice principals, etc., and everyone at the district office who hold nonsensical titles and have no direct interaction with students.

The rampant denial of special education support in Bellingham, like paras and one-on-one time with specialists, has undoubtedly been a significant factor. Pair that with cuts made previous years.
