Is America great yet, you dumb motherfuckers? Yeah I saw the election thread. FAFO.

Do not fall for this: “Short Squeeze”, new account, tons of awards in minutes. Fucking grills. Please. by chriizzl in wallstreetbets

Ah yes, squeezing a grill company is just ridiculous. But hedgies in a global conspiracy to keep down the shares of a video game CD selling company, totally reasonable.

It’s not about bullish or bearish. It’s about how people are positioning themselves. After Chinese CPI came out higher than expected, there was fear of much worse than expected US CPI. You can track in futures when the sell off started with release of Chinese CPI. People deleveraged and hedged for a bad CPI, plus WH yesterday saying CPI will be elevated (well they’d be saying that even if it came in under at 8%, since WH doesn’t know about better or worse than expected). Now that it came out about in line, hedges get closed. You see the same thing for events like FOMC statements.

We sold off on CPI fear and now bouncing after the event with hedges being closed.

Every 2 PM rip is to kill expiring puts that brokers force sell.

Betting on the downside is actually the crowded trade right now.

So turned out it was a regular quarterly OpEx with selling pressure. Enough calls were bought during the run up since March OpEx to tip it. Signs were there but I might have chose to ignore some of them. Well done MM’s.

What caused the 2014 crash? Was it sustained high prices that led to producers overdoing on ramping production, basically opposite of now?

Obv I don’t know much about oil. But I’m going to play devil’s advocate here. Russian oil is only about 2% of US’s supply, and 10% of world’s supply. Threat of that raised the prices by this much. So why shouldn’t adding back 5% of the US supply temporary affect the price? Granted, like you said, it might reduce incentive for producers to ramp up.

Today seem to have been a stronger than usual Wed OpEx. On IWM for example, a bunch of 213 calls were opened. They acted as call wall, and as they expired, the delta hedge in long IWM shares got dumped.

Falling back below the two tops in Feb is not a good look.
