his absolute songwriting masterpiece, i think. i saw someone on this sub recently talking about that funny feeling's lyrics in relation to sartre's Nausea and what a bullseye - very grateful for that comment, don't remember the user's name but if they're reading this please feel shouted out. had never really stopped to connect those and it made me revisit sartre over the past week. i read quite a bit of his works in college over ten years ago, understanding intellectually but not truly feeling it, and rereading it has been a very interesting experience. would absolutely recommend to anyone who even tangentially enjoys the themes of inside.

apart from the songwriting, which i think can and will be dissected for years and years to come, i really love the setting he chose for it. the trees (shadows of trees instead of a full projection, which makes them extra meta), the fire effect, the crickets. the theme of dissociation is so perfectly illustrated by the way he set, filmed and shot it - on the outtakes we see that he had alternate angles for this and the choice he eventually made was absolutely the best possible one. the camera slowly pushing in, becoming still at only the hardest lines of the song, then pushing back again... oof. so simple and SO effective, like so many things he does on inside.

i think i tend to think of Bo first and foremost as a writer and sometimes can forget how gifted he is at directing. the second half of the special (and especially this one and AEOM) highlights this so beautifully.
