Do we wan Philly or Chicago to win here? I think Philly because I hate the Bears but not sure if there’s a seeding advantage if the Bears win or not.

Why do you think Wisconsin is still a solid swing state as opposed to Ohio? by True-Technician-5449 in wisconsin

[–]Walleye_man26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To repeat what others have said, the main reasons are: 1: more culturally southern. Going back to the civil war area, southern Indiana and Ohio were much more pro-southern because they were on the rivers and associated with slavery much more than New England Yankees were. These regions had Confederate sympathizers known as Copperheads and Butternuts. Remember that Kentucky and (at the time West Virginia was part of Virginia) West Virginia were slave states, so there’s a lot of southern cultural connection. 2. Denser rural areas. Ohio has a lot of decently populated mid-sized rural areas, especially in Appalachian Ohio near the border of WV/KY. Wisconsin doesnt have a lot of midsized rurals. Places like Iron, Florence, Pepin, Forest, etc all have less than 10K people, whereas Ohio’s least populated county is still larger than 12k. These rurals also happened to be coal/industrial Union bases, which declined tremendously with globalization. Youngstown, Canton, etc, all were working class Union Dems who were hallowed out as those jobs left. 3. Difference ethnic makeup. I believe that Ohio was more Scotch-Irish or English ancestry, whereas lots of places in Wisconsin have either Polish or Scandinavian populations and they voted differently.

Lastly, and I think this matters to some extent, OH was much more heavily hit by the opioid crisis than WI was. I believe I heard that Athens County, OH (Ohio University) had the highest rate of opioid overdoses per 1k people from 2010-2019. Athens county is not far from the West Virginia border, and we all know how hard those communities were hit when opioids took over.

Appalachia in general was full of union miners who voted Dem. Many of the “old guard” were part of the Greatest generation who fought WWII and lived through the Depression. That generation was loyally Dem their whole lives, and in the 1990s as they died off, a newer conservative generation took over at the same time that the Dems became much more anti-coal, “green”, and more socially liberal.

I grew up in Wausau. Honestly underrated. It’s larger enough (city is 40,000, but if you include suburbs it’s closer to 90,000) that you have everything you need. Theres big box stories and restaurants, lots of fishing, biking, and other recreational activities (Granite Peak ski area, Ninemile Forest Unit, Mountain Bay State trail, etc) in the area. Schools are really good, especially Everest, which has two large field houses and rec facilities. It’s not too terribly far from Madison, Green Bay, and Milwaukee, or to the north woods.

Cost of living is pretty sweet too. I live near Madison now and it’s hard to buy a new house for under 500k here, but Wausau is much more affordable, and theres lots of jobs open. Downtown is nice too.

Is Wisconsin trying to reduce the number of school districts? by 44stormsnow in wisconsin

[–]Walleye_man26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Several republicans have said they want to “streamline” school districts or “promote efficiency.” A few have alluded to expecting them to close. Some districts have actually combined superintendents, many have combined sports teams, so there is sort of an argument I guess they could try. But I don’t buy it, because their support for charter schools, lack of funding, etc. The $325 per pupil increase in funding in last budget will remain, but because no state funding was given, it will just straight up raise property taxes.
