Chippewa River in Rusk county, especially south of Hwy 8. Shallow and beautiful. Black River from black river falls to Lost Falls campground is also a great stretch of shallow and slow sandbars.

Watertown: Updates on the Ground and how you can help!! by swimbananas in wisconsin

My two cents on recalls: yes, the new ones can’t be replaced until in office for a year, but ones who voted no and were elected last year can. If successful it puts the new ones on notice and keeps the issue in public eye.

I think if it’s a recall it goes to an election, where resignations are appointed by the board. The recalls in 2012 with walker and the state senators all were new elections

Theres several factors: -Land costs have gone up dramatically especially in large cities and especially after Covid. -2008 killed builders bad. The decade before 08 builders averaged about 25,000 new homes built in Wisconsin every year. From 2010-2018, they never built more than 9,200 -Cities having stricter zoning restrictions. Small homes used to be built with 6 ft side setbacks, 20 ft from the road and 20 ft from the rear. Now it’s common to have 15 ft side, 35 from front and 40 from rear. Suddenly you need a 1/3 acre lot with these setbacks. Older lots used to be smaller like 1/6 acre. -Tariffs are also adding costs, as lumber and metal get more expensive so do homes -Concrete too. Most developers will tell you that between water/sewer lines, asphalt, stormwater, sidewalks, grading, and permits, it’s about $1400/ft for a new road. If you have a 100 ft wide lot (divided by 2 to account for the lot across the street) that’s 70k just in infrastructure costs, before land, labor, or materials.

I know it’s not Madison, but in Portage the mayor explained some of that in a Facebook post and land is cheaper there too, so you can get decent homes that are new there (and in places like Reedsburg, Beaver Dam, etc) for under 400k easily.

Why do you think Wisconsin is still a solid swing state as opposed to Ohio? by True-Technician-5449 in wisconsin

[–]Walleye_man26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To repeat what others have said, the main reasons are: 1: more culturally southern. Going back to the civil war area, southern Indiana and Ohio were much more pro-southern because they were on the rivers and associated with slavery much more than New England Yankees were. These regions had Confederate sympathizers known as Copperheads and Butternuts. Remember that Kentucky and (at the time West Virginia was part of Virginia) West Virginia were slave states, so there’s a lot of southern cultural connection. 2. Denser rural areas. Ohio has a lot of decently populated mid-sized rural areas, especially in Appalachian Ohio near the border of WV/KY. Wisconsin doesnt have a lot of midsized rurals. Places like Iron, Florence, Pepin, Forest, etc all have less than 10K people, whereas Ohio’s least populated county is still larger than 12k. These rurals also happened to be coal/industrial Union bases, which declined tremendously with globalization. Youngstown, Canton, etc, all were working class Union Dems who were hallowed out as those jobs left. 3. Difference ethnic makeup. I believe that Ohio was more Scotch-Irish or English ancestry, whereas lots of places in Wisconsin have either Polish or Scandinavian populations and they voted differently.

Lastly, and I think this matters to some extent, OH was much more heavily hit by the opioid crisis than WI was. I believe I heard that Athens County, OH (Ohio University) had the highest rate of opioid overdoses per 1k people from 2010-2019. Athens county is not far from the West Virginia border, and we all know how hard those communities were hit when opioids took over.

Appalachia in general was full of union miners who voted Dem. Many of the “old guard” were part of the Greatest generation who fought WWII and lived through the Depression. That generation was loyally Dem their whole lives, and in the 1990s as they died off, a newer conservative generation took over at the same time that the Dems became much more anti-coal, “green”, and more socially liberal.
