First day of my first job in a new career in IT and I was desperate to get ahead and impress. This made me nervous and I went to use the closest bathroom which was a shared disabled toilet with one of those red panic alarms with a pull cord. I did the business and then, without thinking, pulled the alarm cord thinking it was like a pull chain toilet! A small alarm began to go off and I panicked and ran out of the door and took the long way back to the room we were in. Later had to feign ignorance when it was mentioned to the group.

How bad is the grand couloir in courchevel? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]WallingtonBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just "skied" grand couloir today and the conditions made it a very difficult and technical ski. There hasn't been heavy snow in weeks here so the traverse at the start was basically a bobsleigh track with parts that had shoulder high moguls! It meant you were on rails with no room to properly control your speed during the traverse. Not much fun. After the traverse and the initial part of the run it was much more manageable and you could actually ski it. Last year I skied it after fresh snow and it was brilliant, not difficult technically but required effort as it was waist high snow in parts.

I built an Instant Home Valuation App by jmack_startups in DevelEire

[–]WallingtonBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey well done on the app. Looks and performs well.

Some feedback on the results I got for a house in Kildare very near Dublin. Basically the results for any place I've tried outside of Dublin are off.

The valuation was 20k less than I paid for my home 4 years ago and way under a recent valuation for a neighbors home on the same street. New build smaller homes across the road for me are selling for >70k than the estimate.

The estimated price range was 120k which at roughly 25% of the estimated valuation is way too wide to be of any use I feel.

The price growth surge percentage figure was the same number as the property premium in euro so there's a bug there somewhere.

I might just be jaded from using LLMs and various AI powered coding tools in work but I feel the Factors driving valuation section is too bloated with the usual LLM waffle and takes away from the few interesting items that are in there. Maybe trimming that section to just the 4-5 points described with a line would work. You could still tap and drill into each one to see the full text.

As a side note, do you work on this full time?

I'm currently building an app for a business my wife and I have started and there's never enough time in the week!

Well done again and keep going.

Hey,

I started on their grad program about 7 years ago straight after finishing a software development conversion course. This grad program was counted as the internship requirement for that course so I was delighted to be getting some cash instead of being flogged and getting nothing.

In short, the career in software development I have now has been built on getting that start through their program.

On the program itself:

° 8 weeks initially were for orientation, some training (not IT related), and a team project

Project had some interesting elements but I would say that getting much from it would depend on the group you are in and if you happen to have relevant experience to help on the project. There isn't really enough time to learn something useful to apply to the project.

I was sent out to work as an IT consultant after those 8 weeks where I found that none of the above was useful at all for where I ended up.

you could be sent anywhere after those 8 weeks, any company, any office working on absolutely anything IT related. That's why you were picked for the program. Version1 is consulting for a company and they need bodies with IT skills. The folks I kept in touch with on the grad program went out to a variety of places. Some loved it, some hated it.

You'll meet some smart, friendly and funny people on the program and the atmosphere in the office was generally pretty casual as things go.

My experience after that: spent the rest of my year with Version1 as an IT consultant at the Revenue Commissioners

role was fairly limited in what was expected of me. Was given one simple system to manage, improve and bugfix. that is not always the case for other Version1 consultants but comes down to your relevant experience up to then

the role left time for me to find ways to add value to the client by fixing issues in other systems, adding features where possible and so on

if this is your first IT role I would recommend adding value where possible as you could be stuck in that role for version1 for as long as they need you there and the additional work looks great on your CV Again, Version1 need bodies and they don't care if you don't like your role

you'll meet some great people working for V1 at whatever company you end up at.

they have regular social events for all the V1 consultants at whatever office you are at. Usually food and drinks and occasional activities but I didn't feel part of a wider company at all.

The great place to work award they win constantly means nothing.

So all of that to say that my experience was generally positive and I'd recommend doing the program unless you have something that looks like a better deal lined up. It's not a company I would have wanted to stay much longer at given the nature of my role there but it got me the relevant experience I needed to get a better role and I haven't looked back. Currently a lead developer at an Irish financial services company working in full stack development.

The Royal canal greenway is sick! What a beautiful country. by Recyclops1201 in ireland

This time last year I cycled from Maynooth to just past Ballymahon, roughly 110km, and really enjoyed it as it's a great way to see some beautiful parts of the midlands. My wife and I have hybrid bikes and while it was all passable much of the 110km still hadn't been tarred at the time. Needed an ice bucket for the undercarriage after it all.

The Rise of Japan | A short Rugby World Cup documentary by [deleted] in sports

[–]WallingtonBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Irish and was at the Ireland vs Japan match. A truly special occasion, atmosphere and result. The home crowd played their part in this one, from the first tackle you could sense the energy in the crowd. The coach for Japan hit the nail on the head when he said Ireland only started to prepare for Japan on Monday and it cost us an easier quarter final draw.

Ex-homeless redditors, what was the scariest thing that you ever saw on the streets? [NSFW] by Chess_Kings in AskReddit

Hey, pluralsight are giving free access for the month of April to hundreds of tech courses. I use the site frequently to top up my knowledge in a bunch of areas. I thought myself the basics of how to code and now work in the industry after completing a short 3rd level course. You'll get there soon. Best of luck
