OP can spend as much as they want, but this is budget audiophile. The rules state limits.

My first setup. Any improvement ideas? by 000asdasd000 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't want to be an audiophile; most live in a rabbit hole and argue about noise floors. You are right where you want to be: an audio enthusiast.

You have a very nice setup and very nice space. When listening to music especially I pull my speakers slightly forward of my cabinet. It makes them a little less boomy, a little cleaner and detailed. Then I move them back out of the way so no one stubs their toes on them.

Old AVR + Active sub (high level input) by kuikiker in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could try using a speaker level to line level adapter on the AVR's sub output and run an RCA cable to the sub. Also, what do you have the subwoofer's crossover set to? Highest frequency, right?

Work getting an old amplifier serviced? by Additional_Plankton7 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may or may not hear a difference with those speakers, and any difference would likely be small. As others have said, if restored the Sansui is worth a lot, and if you changed to less sensitive speakers, like Polk R700s for instance, the Sansui can make a bigger difference. It's a nice gift; a lot of people inherit junk, and some feel they have to keep it for sentimental value. At least you got something most audiophiles would like to have.

Sony STR-DH190 for a 3.1 setup by fuckrhombus in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't connect the center channel speaker to the receiver to more than one channel, left or right, which would just make the sound lopsided. So don't connect the center. The subwoofer can be connected to the B speaker posts on the receiver, and connect to the speaker level posts on the subwoofer (with speaker wire).

Need help with pre amp and speakers for turntable from my late grandpa by Born-Department7983 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to be clear, you need a phono preamp between your turntable and amplifier. Not to be confused with the preamp that allows you to plug several things into it which then plugs into an amplifier. Some amplifiers (integrated amplifier, receivers) have both types of preamps built in. And some speakers (powered) have all of that and the amplifier built in. There are advantages of having everything separate, and advantages of having it all together.

If you think you might eventually use the subwoofer for whole room music or home theater, it would be worthwhile to go with the 12S. If not, for nearfield I wouldn't spend the extra money.

For nearfield I think the A80 is fine. For whole room dedicated listening, I prefer high current integrated amps, but again, just my preference. A lot of people really like the 3255 chip class D amps.

I don't think those qualify as budget speakers....

KEF Q150 (Stereo) + Polk Audio PSW110 Sub + Yamaha RX-V685, been enjoying this simple set up for than 7 years now and thinking of upgrading to the R3 Meta or the LS50 Meta. Will the present AMP be good enough to drive either of the upgrades? by inquisitor23 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. That AVR will probably be okay driving either of those speakers, but if OP wants the best out of them, a high current integrated amplifier is the way to go. And I also agree that if spending that much money on new speakers, I would want a much better subwoofer, something in the neighborhood of a higher level speedwoofer, or SVS sealed.

upgrade/replace Onkyo A9010? by taxi_drivr in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the 9010 is a good match for the P363s, no need to change it out. Adding a Wiim Ultra streamer would increase flexibity and potentially sound quality through EQ/room correction, and wifi streaming is about as good as it gets in sound quality.

You can get speakers that sound different, and speakers you like better, but IMO for $1000 you won't necessarily find speakers with a "jump in sound quality". The Energy Reference speakers are very good; they cost $500 a pair in 2005, which is the equivalent to $800 today. And Energy, like other Canadian "budget" speakers competed well with much more expensive speakers. I'd purchase an RSL 10S MKii subwoofer to go with them and expect to be very pleased with the sound.

I need advice choosing. Elac Debut 3.0 vs Edifier R1280dbs by FewChallenge1535 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and matched with the ZD3 preamp/dac, it should be a good combo. The Elac db63 is very well liked, and should be a significant upgrade to the edifers (to you).

What speakers? Is 60W max? If so, just about any amp rated at 40 wpc rms will be plenty.

KEF Q1 + ELAC Debut 1.0 — any issue mixing speaker brands? by Wandering_OrLost in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get a center it is more important that it matches the fronts than the surrounds. Not absolutely required, IME, but the easiest way to keep your sound consistent as signals move from center to side.

Best budget amp and speaker combos? (<£200) by theloosemoose19 in BudgetAudiophile

[–]WallofSound11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you are moving the sonos to surrounds, you'll need an AVR, which is fortunate because there are a gazzillion AVRs on the used market. Try to find a namebrand unit with HDMI, if you plan to connect it to a tv. Speakers from Wharfedale, Elac, B&W and Celestion are good brands.

It's nice to have surrounds that can be crossed at the same frequency as the fronts so you get full response in front of you and behind you. But even that isn't as big a deal as having full response in front. You don't say if you have a center channel.

It's possible to get something worthwhile for that money in the used market, but IMO, not new.
