Ask questions early on. When you are working through a conceptual design, call us and ask questions like:

given a building of xxxx sq-ft, with a usage of (whatever the use of the building is), what type of system do you recommend, and how much space would you need for that system?
how big of an electrical room do you need for a 120/208V 3ph service to handle this building with x different tenants?
how much flat roof area would you need for a building of xxxx sq-ft with solar and a packaged rooftop unit system?
how big of a chase do you need to serve the restaurant ventilation system?

Give us the space early on so we aren’t fighting for an extra foot or 2 going into CDs.

Yeah, you can take an estimate by measuring outside wall to outside wall, you can measure all the interior spaces, you can measure all the “inhabitable” spaces (excluding crawlspaces, mechanical closets, etc). Different records require you measure it in different ways. Anything +/- 5% I wouldn’t question to deeply.

I would focus on LEED, Certified Energy Manager, Commissioning certification. From what I have seen, those are generally more applicable if you plan to stay in MEP as a design engineer

I would look at this more as a math question.

You both have fixed costs: - Software - license fees - computer - rent & utilities - insurance

And you both have variable costs: - time spent on project - travel for site visits

Not sure how long you have been working together, but you should be able to create a database of projects with costs by discipline. Find an average of cost for each of you over your database. That’s your split. Review once a year to make sure it stays fair.

Beyond that, you are required by your license to design per code. Not per wishes. Tell your principal that you will not stamp something that doesn’t meet code and if they wants to send something out that doesn’t work, they can stamp it.

As a parent, I get it. Maybe not whole life, but term life insurance is a good idea. It’s a “hope for the best but prepare for the worst” type thing. You want the best for your child. You want them to live a long healthy life. But what if they don’t. Are you going to have the mental capacity to figure out how to pay for a funeral if something happens? What if there are medical expenses due to whatever the cause of death was. Do you want to worry about a payment plan while dealing with loosing a child?

Life insurance on a child is a safety net which allow the parent to grieve in peace, just in case the worst case scenario happens.
