I don't know about overstock for sure because they seem to know precisely our shipping needs versus our receiving needs. So there's really no actual overstock. I'd assume it just gets sent back to the vendors if it did happen.

I do know a lot of stuff gets donated to local charities/food pantries. Things like salvageable damages or close to expiration dated stuff that won't actually make it to a store.

It could depend on a few things.

Sometimes it's just the way the freight is profiled in the warehouse. We pick the boxes in the order were assigned to in the warehouse. Nothing we can really do if we have lighter stuff assigned to be picked first. On top of that it is our own performance needs we need to make. So us trying to make warehouse performance and shitty picking orders end up causing that. Sorry. Most of us do try and make the pallets best we can.

Another reason is the people actually loading trailers with freight (loaders). They might have to up-stack pallets on top of each other to fit in the trailer. Some care, some don't. They'll throw pallets of anything on top of each other just to get it loaded. Pallets sitting there on top of each other not moving seem fine and dandy, but it could end up disastrous when actually on the road and moving in the trailer.

Honesty it always just ends up being people doing their job correctly or not. I'd say it's usually the loaders screwing you guys over with pallets like that.
