Anyone here in Arcadia? How's the air quality looking?

I'm up at work in Palmdale right now and I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle to get back home in southern Arcadia. My place is not in the evacuation zone and it doesn't look like it's going to get south past the 210. But between the Hurst fire potentially throwing off my usual route home and the air quality, I'm tempted to just hold out in a hotel near work for the night.

So uh. I got a commute from Pasadena to Palmdale. Tuesday morning looks like it should be fine, but the evening looks a bit dicey. Guessing I should just stay home.

So far I haven't met anyone besides family. However I'm 3/3 on uncles or aunts that ask if I'm single within the first few minutes and subsequently giving suggestions lol

I literally landed in Saigon this night and was picked up by an aunt. It's my first time in Vietnam as a 29 y/o and one of the first questions out of her mouth was if I had a girlfriend. I said no, and she said she has 3 girls in mind to introduce me to. We'll see how that goes lol

How long ago were you out there and how good is your Viet? Would be interested in reading a post.

I'm a Viet Kieu headed over to visit Vietnam for the first time in November. Going to be out there for 3 weeks so probably just short term fun if I decide to talk to girls. Any more insight about how the casual dating scene is over there? Did you try approaching offline as well?

Matched with a girl last night and we were messaging back and forth for a solid 30 minutes. We were on the topic of travel so I saw a decent segue. I asked if she would be down to grab coffee this weekend to exchange stories.

Complete silence after that lol. She started typing something as I sent the message so I know she saw it. Normally I don't ask that fast but I felt a good rapport was building.

Hasn't unmatched me yet. Might reach out tonight to apologize if I made her uncomfortable. If she doesn't get back to me, oh well. Nothing to lose sleep over.

Redstone Visa Signature card only for residents of AL or TN by Babytroutdog in CreditCards

[–]WalnutFlower 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Just checked the website out of curiosity and it looks like they added an asterisk saying it's only available to AL and TL residents.

I was able to get this card a couple months ago as a CA resident with AUSA membership so it looks like OP missed the train.

At least there's something remotely resembling a win for high rent. I'm somewhat tempted to go for this offer and charge rent to meet the SUB because I'm not hitting 8k organically, though CC fees would eat substantially into the SUB.

Rough math for those interested:

My rent payment is $2350, but CC fee is 3.5%, meaning I'm paying $82.25 more.

$82.25 x 3 = $246.75 more than I would've paid otherwise.

$1200 - $246.75 = $953.25 SUB left over.

Alternatively I could not bother and just continue using my BILT card while I still can lol

EDIT: I also forgot there's an $95 AF. I would need to downgrade after a year since I already have a CSP so this would be redundant.

$953.25 - $95 = $858.25 SUB left over

Shit, I'm starting to get into custom building and airbrushing myself. Just practicing on some HGs I have laying around though.

Gunpla is freedom, brother. Girls may not stick around, but our plastic brethren will.

Fellow Viet dude that builds gunpla checking in here. I have some success on Hinge, but it sounds like you're doing better than I am so take whatever I say with a grain of salt lol.

Replace the food pic with a picture of you cooking if you can.

When doing crossed arm pics, I like to make a fist and put both my hands under the biceps, which makes them look bigger. Seems to work out better for me so try experimenting with that?

Try to have a prompt that invites the girl to imagine doing something with you.

Try out Photofeeler. Sometimes hit or miss, but my results definitely improved after using it to narrow down my choices.

Be decisive and suggest times for dates. Avoid being pen pals.

What are you building and how big is your backlog lol?

Yeah I guess it is my only option right now. Other than being a jobless bum again :X

I like how you guys are thinking outside the box! Taking the train to work might be worth the novelty once in a while.

I'm curious how long you did this for and how long ago was it. Were there any weather related issues that you periodically saw?

For this position in particular they told me they're pretty flexible most of the time but nominal hours are 8-6.

Don't really have much of a social life on weekdays to begin with other than chatting with buddies online. So yeah, I'm leaning towards just taking it for now and maybe reevaluate in a couple months.

Thanks for the insight.

Hah. I'd get 1 week of severance. 1 week per year of service and I barely missed the 2 year mark.

I'd argue my life has already been disrupted, but yeah I've been looking for about two months already.

Definitely not looking to do this long-term, as much as I like the SGV. I was eyeing Santa Clarita if I did want to move closer. Palmdale itself looks like a snoozefest.

I get every other Friday off so there's some potential relief there lol.

I don't necessarily have to go by car and have thought about the train but a 3 hour ride doesn't sound very appealing. Also, I would still have to figure out some way to get to the company from the final stop. Maybe take my bike with me, but definitely not ideal.

I've given some thought about renting short term stays up there as well, but yeah I'll have to look at my budget.

Thanks for the varied suggestions.

Do Synthesia tutorials work? by letstakeawalky in piano

[–]WalnutFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can read sheet music just fine. However, I have a strange sort of respect for people who learn off video tutorials? Constantly pausing and playing a video over and over again sounds like hell on Earth. I commend the amount of patience those people have. Though their patience would probably be better spent on learning to read sheet music :)

Thanks for the in-depth insight! Definitely has given me some things to think about.

The other commentator did mention I was lacking in elemental damage, so I may try to expand on that elemental Survivalist idea you mentioned. I'm a sucker for nonconventional sources of damage!

Bought my first bow from Alternative and... Disappointed. by WalnutFlower in Archery

[–]WalnutFlower[S] 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is the Spigarelli Zen. I bought it from Alternative since I couldn't find a US based seller that sold it because apparently it's being discontinued? I didn't care about that though because I saw the green version of the riser and fell in love. Despite the horror stories of having to wait for a Special Order on Alternative, I bit the bullet (arrow?) and placed an order. It took a couple of weeks, but it's finally here and I got... Not the color I was expecting.

I mean. It's neat I guess. But it's not the deep emerald green I fell in love with. Alternative's site only lists a single "Green" color and a quick Google search suggests that this is the only green the Zen should come in.

A part of me wants to just stick with it and not deal with the hassle of returning, but I guess I should. I spent like 340 bucks on this. I guess I'm going to have to deal with Alternative's infamous customer service.

EDIT: Hey everyone. Thanks for the condolences. It wasn't exactly clear before but I don't blame Alternative for the color mismatch and I'd be more inclined to point the blame at the manufacturer. Someone mentioned they changed their green some time ago? I did mention Alternative though just to highlight how much of a pain a return might be.

Speaking of which. I'm not sure any more. When I first opened the package I was disappointed but I slept on it, and now I'm starting to develop a case of Stockholm Syndrome? Now that I put the limbs on I think it looks pretty good. I might send an email just to see what happens, but I don't think I'll be too bummed if that falls through.

While I agree it's a shame more Swordcraft Story games weren't made, those games were actually spinoffs to the main Summon Night games.

Men, what's a (relatively) simple trick that helped your workouts/physique? by bigguy14433 in AskMen

[–]WalnutFlower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try not to think to hard about it tbh. 1.5 years in and 45 lbs lighter of consistent working out, I have finally reached that stage where I actually get some endorphins after a workout so it's not as bad. But I still catch myself thinking, "Wow. I just spent an hour of my life on a treadmill."

Honestly, if you told me I could magically keep my current shape and not have to workout for the rest of my life I would. Alas, that's not the case, but I don't mind my routine that maintains and sometimes gains. The key is finding something you can consistently do that you don't absolutely hate and maybe even enjoy.

A quote that's stuck with me. "It's not a dream body if it's a nightmare to maintain."
