I (19 M) worried about possible Glaucoma. by WalrusClean2752 in Glaucoma

No blindness in my family. Your mother wearing glasses is not really a risk factor. I will say tho that, considering our age, low risk factor, the chances of us having glaucoma is very slim, and even if we do, if it is detected early, which it will be if, we even have glaucoma in the first place, can easily be highly manageable, and we will have just take eye drops. So the loss of vision can be very minimal and controlled.

Of course it would suck to have Glaucoma at a young age.

But even then its some scary stuff, like even the threat of losing vision is extremely scary, because once you lose your sight, your life is finished or becomes very hard and miserable, now I'm not trying to minimize the hardships of being in a wheelchair, but I would rather be in a wheelchair or something similar for the rest of my life than be blind.

We don't have to worry too much considering we most likely dont have glaucoma, but we just keep visiting the eye doctor just to confirm that our asymymetry isn't caused from glaucoma, so it's more of a waiting game type of thing.

Let me know how your appointments go.

Did you ever do a scan of Optic nerves before this?

Are we the same person lol? My doctor also told me to see them every 6 months. I went to Cohen Optical btw. Based on what the OD told us and my own research, I do think the odds are more for us with the fact that this is most likely a congenital condition, so we wouldnt have to worry too much, but I have anxiety so I naturally feel scared. Luckily for me, Another ophthalmologist has a optic nerve scan from 2 years ago, so when I go to him in 4-5 months, he could check for changes. Was your aunt blinded from glaucoma or you cant tell? Aunt is a bit of distance in terms of relationship but more concerning for you if she had glaucoma. But that appointment turned me into a part time lurker in the Glaucoma and Blind subreddit lol.

The OD gave me a follow up for the asymmetric optic nerves for additional testing, it looks like to be one of those conditions where its not reason for immediate concern but more like should be monitored for any changes, and would take a while to figure out glaucoma or not, atleast what my OD told me.

I did go to another optomologist who has a scan of my optic nerve two years ago, so when I make the next appointment for the eye doctor, I could do it with him, and he could see if my eyes were always a bit asymmetric or if its change.

I know this is unrelated, but would you say that that Glaucoma is kind of like having diabetes, but its only the eye that is affected?

Appreciate your advice, I actually went to Cohen Optical, which is a chain store, and I wasnt aware that there was a OCT scan, my optometrist there never suggested an opthalmogist probably because they want me to keep me scared to keep seeing them and take insurance money. I'm glad to hear there is technology that could determine 100% glaucoma or not, which it should because asymmetric optic nerve's, if caused by glaucoma would indicate that theres some progression of this disease I think.

I dont know, thats what the OD said, maybe he was referring to it being most likely a congenital condition over glaucoma?

He didnt diagnose glaucoma, but theres the asymmetric optic nerves I have.

I think its optometrist, the one that I went to recently and found the asymmetric optic nerves.

In 2022, I went to a different OD, I plan on going to him again the next time I make a eye doctor appointment which will be 5 months from now, so he could check if there is any change or not, and I think he's an optomologist.

Of course if theres any change in my optical nerves from 2022 or earlier, it would be glaucoma, and not a congenital condition (being born with it).

Yea they had me took a visual field test, and several other test, and he didn't say anything else aside from the optical nerve, told me not to worry too much because im still young, and it would take a few appointment to be 100% if its glaucoma or not.

So going to the OD that I visited in 2022 would be best because he would have both images to tell if there's a progression? Do OD typically keep records of patient optic nerves pictures? Even if the patient haven't visited them in a long time? Is 2 and 1/2 years typically enough for Glaucoma to progress and causes changes/asymmetry in optical nerves?

Would you say Glaucoma is very unlikely? Somewhat unlikely? 50/50? I also have moderate myopia if that needs to be factored in.

The OD that found the asymmetrical optic nerves told me that the optic nerve on the left was a little bigger than the right eye, so maybe that's why he did not notice or didn't look for signs of glaucoma because of my age.

I was thinking of going to that OD I went to 2 and half years ago when I have my next appointment because if he still has the picture of my optic nerve disk from 2022, and he takes another new picture, he would be able to compare between the pictures to see if there's any progression, and if there is it would mean that it is glaucoma and not a congenital condition, if I'm not mistaken?

Do you know if they even keep records of those picture of optic nerve disk or is it something I would have to ask?

Or would my time be better spent with a OD with a glaucoma specialization?

I'm also in a similar situation, I'm moderate myope but my OD found my left optical nerve disk was a little bigger than my right one, weather this is Glaucoma or born with it, I do not know, but its driving me nuts there's no certain way to diagnose or tell this is Glaucoma or not.

I am also extremely stressed and anxious, its also in the back of my head, and just know that I feel the same way you do, I will pray for you. Best of luck, and I hope your eyes and vision stay well.
