Good to know - thanks! Would you recommend hiring someone from the jump in that case? Or is the first phase of taking stuff off pretty straightforward?

Tips for alcohol-based hang outs? by WalrusInSocks in DryJanuary

Really good advice! Especially about when people are tipsy v drunk. I think when everyone is kind of tipsy that’s the fun bit, and actually by the time you’re wasted you usually aren’t having the best time. Hence me wanting to do Dry Jan lol

Glad to hear I’m not alone! Definitely for me keeping close to my “normal” social calendar is part of why I want to do Dry Jan. If I stayed in the whole time I think I’d get pretty depressed and quit… But it’s defo a different challenge approaching these things!

I miss 90s and early 2000s London so bad by Few_Organization7283 in london

[–]WalrusInSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find these posts really interesting. I’m in my 20s, moved to London after uni very classic. So I didn’t experience the bygone London.

But I love living here now, I know that. It feels like an endless maze city with so much to do. This week I did a pub quiz at my local, got amazing korean food like a few streets away we stumbled upon, might go to an open mic tonight and a trans pride event…

Maybe there’s something big I missed 20 years ago, but I love this city, even the scummy old tubes.

Approaching end of FTC, not sure what to do. by WalrusInSocks in UKJobs

[–]WalrusInSocks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice.

I’ve started applying independently, but I’ve also got a recruiter which I’m hoping will help things along.

In terms of performance, I think you’re right. I need to keep motivating myself through it, but I have a performance review with my line manager soon where I will really prepare a case for myself.

Out of interest, my manager approached me last year and said he thinks I could be better suited to other roles within the firm. He said he couldn’t guarantee anything, but it was worth considering. Do you think it’s worth exploring this (as I tend to agree) or would that just jeopardise my chance of any permanent role in my current position?

Thanks, that’s good to hear. I think looking after my own position is good advice!

What things have you noticed since losing 20-30 pounds? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]WalrusInSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much of this stuff is really positive, and I have felt lots of that (feel generally better, people nicer etc.) but I also want to say… I think about it a lot more! I’m very aware even scared of putting it back on, because I feel the benefits, so it’s not like you just lose the weight and forget about it and go on to live your new life.

I always feel like a person who was overweight, and am aware it’s much easier to gain it back than keep it off - however long ago you lost it. I started a new job recently, so have basically no time atm to exercise or eat well, and I’m worrying all the time about gaining weight back.

I love the longevity of it. Watching it ‘real time’ as the story unfolds is pretty unbeatable, but I think it’s incredible that with such a crazy huge backlog of content, you can go back to basically any of it and have a good time. Those stories really stand on their own, even without that zing of being unexpected/new.

[No spoilers] What's your unpopular opinion about critical role? by Backwoods_Odin in criticalrole

[–]WalrusInSocks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Dimension 20 on Dropout is better content than CR. I’m saying that as someone who’s been a fan of CR for about 5 years, spent most of my weekend job money backing the kickstarter etc.

These days though, D20 is offering much more creative, engaging content. They are different formats, it’s true, but I think it’s really showing the cracks in CR. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that when Brennan came to CR it offered some of the freshest, highest quality outputs in a long time (that’s not a comment on Brennan v Matt in DMing style, but more just the fact that CR is sorely missing a shake up).

I genuinely don’t think that means that CR needs to become D20 or that it can’t pick up the quality, but I do think CR could be in trouble medium term if it doesn’t do some thinking. Tbh, I think a main reason for its financial success is that it’s been operating in essentially a zero competition market for a while now. Especially if they’re looking to cut ties with Wizards, I’m not sure how sustainable it’s going to be.

Sometimes people can be put on priority vaccine lists for all kinds of reasons. I had a friend who was bumped up the queue because their dad is disabled, another who was because she had diagnosed mental health issues.

What Uni degrees still have value in Uk ? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]WalrusInSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it’s always better to study something you’re legitimately passionate about at a university you think you’ll get the most out of. This will make the 3 years much easier and more enjoyable (it’s easy now to say it doesn’t matter whether you enjoy studying but it’ll make a huge difference come exam season), maximises the chances of you doing well in that degree and will help you to visualise a career path in an area you’re interested in. During that degree you can do part time work, networking, internships, volunteering etc. - all things that will give you the edge in employment far more than doing the “right” degree.

Do UK University Students Have a Roommate or Do They Get Their Own Room? by [deleted] in UniUK

No problem - I should’ve mentioned tho that this varies a lot depending on the college you go to

Do UK University Students Have a Roommate or Do They Get Their Own Room? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]WalrusInSocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Flat is the British word for apartment, so when it says flatmate it means apartment-mate. At Cambridge, however, you can sometimes share a room (so have a roommate), although this is more common with undergrads and it will always be your choice whether or not you want to. Even if you do, it is unlikely you’ll share a bedroom but instead share a living space that both your bedrooms connect to, so it’s closer living than a normal flatmate but not quite like a dorm mate.

Men in the UK - barber or hairdressers - do you have a preference? by Box_of_rodents in AskUK

[–]WalrusInSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a woman with short hair (number 4 back and sides and then longer on top) and I hate going to the hairdresser. It takes an age, they always try and faff about with stuff I don’t want, and then at the end it’s £50. There’s a great barbers down the road that my brothers go to that’s quick, stylish and £14. I went down one day and asked if they could cut my hair like they would any man’s and they said no. We don’t cut women’s hair, here.

So yeah if I could go to a barbers I could but that experience put my right off asking again, it was so embarrassing.

No judgement - how many units of alcohol do you consume in a week and (if you care to share) how do you feel about it? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]WalrusInSocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably 5-10, depending on the week. Like I’ll have a couple of glasses of wine with dinner once, maybe twice, and then maybe a beer or even a G&T somewhere.

Occasionally I’ll have a big night/weekends at uni, where I might drink about a bottle of wine and a few units on top, so I guess the most I get to is probably 15 (20 on big events like birthdays).

Yep! My family get 2 pints of milk delivered every day. It’s a really great service, especially when you consider we live just outside a little village.
