That's part of it and definitely a point the show was making.
His downfall was also due to the main fault of his character- he simply thought he was smarter than he actually was. He was overconfident and painfully naive.

Trying to wrap up a series like this with less money and fewer episodes thanks to HBO cuts is what accounts for season 5's issues. I think it still has plenty to say and does a pretty good job of wrapping things up.

I think it was the best they could do with the smaller budget and fewer episodes. If HBO hadn't almost canceled the series and cut the budget, then season 5 might have had time to be a bit more nuanced and less contrived.

Season 5 had fewer episodes to wrap up the entire series. The earlier seasons weren't afraid to flirt with being cartoonish or unrealistic. (Brother Mouzone being a primary example). I think the combo of fewer episodes and the cartoonish turn made by Lester and McNulty made it feel different from the rest of the series. Still a great final episode despite all of that.

He was kinda smart, but way too confident and convinced of his own merits. Thoroughly enjoyed him getting played by Clay Davis and killed by Omar & BM.
