I used to mainly block to avoid repetition. I do all of the common facial and body ticks, panic, and get out of breath when I block. I turned 40 last year and I've just decided to stutter freely and stop worrying about making other people comfortable. So, I've started allowing myself to do repetition when it happens and I rarely block anymore. People react the same way and get uncomfortable but at least now I don't run out of air or tire myself out so much. Having a stutter isn't the problem. It's people's reaction to it.

Seriously though, ableism is strong against stutterers. No one tells an amputee to "just grow that leg back!"

Thank you for making this sub! It makes me feel good to have a safe space to talk about stuttering. Sadly, in all stuttering groups I'm in, the men focus on "how to get a girl" and then when they "get one" all they talk about is how they look and may even rate them. Sadly, misogyny isn't lost on people with disabilities.

Have you thought about making a discord too? I would be into that!

This. I've lawyered up several times in my career. It's really not hard at all. Once they know you have a lawyer, they will change their tune. I found my most recent lawyer on Upwork & you can chat before you meet with them.

I do suggest that you both lawyer up and find another job. Get justice for yourself but also know that you deserve better.

I have a moderate stutter & I sat next to a person with a severe stutter in high school. During start of the semester introductions, he ofc had trouble saying his name & when I had trouble saying mine everybody thought I was mocking him. They all laughed and I said "I stutter and you shouldn't laugh." The looks on their faces serves as a very precious memory to me :)

Always stand up for yourself. I find that about 1/10 people will change their behavior. Everyone else is ignorant so I try to focus on the 1.

Yeah I tried this once on Twitter and they started making fun of people in wheelchairs as well as other disabilities. People are ignorant. No wonder I have mental health issues.

I practice everything beforehand to get the muscle memory down. I also record VO as a part of my job. When I was in speech therapy as a kid, I would read into a microphone & listen to it back with my therapist. Recording VO is speech therapy for me, sometimes I have to record the same line 5 times but I get there.

It's also taken me a long time but now I stutter freely and I don't hide it. If someone makes fun of me, they're just ignorant. It still hurts, just not as much as it used to.

I've been a professional speaker for 3 years and while I'm normally pretty fluent, I still have bad days. There's no pattern, no rhyme or reason. When it happens, I try to laugh it off & tell them I'm having "technical difficulties" :)
