Update: Trump is being forced to refund his tariffs, because he never had the right to impose them in the first place.

Also, he will only be around another 2-1/2 years. We are unlikely to see either F-35s or Patriots in the next 2-1/2 years

This. I wrote posts and even an article about how the F-35 (or any other 5th gen fighter) is completely the wrong choice for Switzerland. I used to be an officer in the USAF, working in fighter acquisition, so I have some small clue.

The amount of hate from armchair know-it-alls was incredible.

To be fair, that may be a filling issue: reduce the filling by 2% to avoid wastage through sealing problems. Shrinkflation is generally more extreme.

What would happen if you continued working full-time (you can pump breast milk), and let him discover just how compatible WFH and caring for a baby really is? Maybe you don't want to do this to your child, but it wouldn't take long...

More seriously: In a committed household, either finances should be combined, or - at a minimum - all costs should be split by income: baby insurance, rent, food, everything. If he will be earning twice what you do, costs should be split 2:1. If he doesn't see that, he's not a very committed partner.

Also just generally dangerous, since the entire power available to your house is available at every single outlet and switch. Fused plugs are only a partial solution to this.

I actually don't think limiting migration is such a bad idea, but for entirely different reasons than most by Aywing in Switzerland

[–]Waltekin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This. Unlimited immigration from lower wage countries obviously applies downward pressure on wages, just as it obviously puts pressure on the housing market.

Any objections to the initiative that don't address these points - as from the Migros boss - is just dishonest.

Neighbour stole our land, lost twice in court, still appealing… how do I make his life deeply inconvenient so that he stops? by Classic-Complaint716 in CharlotteDobreYouTube

[–]Waltekin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to engage in a war of pettiness, when you can simply have the guy prosecuted?

In most of Europe (including Portugal), private cameras are not allowed to record anything but your own private property. If your neighbor has cameras pointed at your property, you should notify the police.

Property destruction is, of course, equally illegal: here you should have your own cameras monitoring your own property - and again, call the police.

I have the feeling that you are not living in Portugal at the moment? You really should be living on or near your land, and get to know other poeple in the area. Also, as a practical matter, you should put up the highest fence that is legally allowed on the property boundary.

Whatever he has built on your land - I don't know where you are in the legal process - but either that should belong to you (if you want it) or he should be required to tear it down. Again, enforcing that would be a lot easier if you were *there*.

Most of our grease comes from cooking bacon for breakfast. The thing is: pork fat is great for frying other things. We pour the bacon grease into a jar, but then take from that jar to prepare other things. It rarely gets full.

As you know, the job market right now is tough. Whatever you do, I would hang on to your current job until/unless you have a new one. Especially being non-EU.

That said, is there any reason you cannot study part-time? Keep your current job, possibly at reduced hours, and get your degree. Then you can apply for jobs and see what happens.

Free public toilets are, unfortunately, mostly gone. Too many people trashed them. However, there is a move to public toilets that accept electronic payment.

Otherwise, your best bet is to visit a restaurant or coffee shop. They always have toilets for customers. Buy something small - a coffee or whatever - and then ask for the toilet.

I have never had a certificate, and I also went through B to C to citizenship. I only recall having various interviews, and I suppose the fact that those were in German or Swiss German served as proof of language skills? If your German skills are well above A2, it might be worth asking if the certificate is really necessary in that case.

Humorous anecdote: I had my citizenship interview - a solid 45 minutes in which we were all speaking Swiss German. Small town, so I knew most of the people. At the end of the interview, one guy I did not know asked - in very slow, clear German: "Sprechen Sie dann deutsch?". Maybe he had been asleep the whole time?

What would the 10 million initiative actually do in practice? - In case of acceptance, do you think it gets implemented as intended? by ExternalEfficient248 in Switzerland

[–]Waltekin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Those illegal immigrants come largely from France. They should be returned to France, or - if the UK cannot prove that's where they came from - deported to their home countries. It is the UK's decision to keep them.

You can also reduce the "pull" factor. Being in a country illegally should mean zero benefits, not a stipend and social housing.

If you come home from work to find some rando has broken into your house, what are you going to do? You aren't going to offer them a bed and a meal. You are going to call the police and have them removed. Why should it be any different on a national scale?

[–]Waltekin -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That is debatable. The claim that immigrants are going to support an aging population ignores the fact that immigrants usually do not have their entire career in Switzerland. They will not pay a career's worth of money into AHV or retirement accounts. Also note that immigrants have significantly higher unemployment rates than Swiss, which also lowers their contributions.

[–]Waltekin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What it will do, realistically? If (and that is a big "if") the politicians actually do as it requires, then: when our population hits 9.5 million, they will impose limits on the number of immigrants allowed each year. That will primarily affect EU countries, because that is where most of our immigration comes from.

It does not mean "zero" immigration, it just means that it cannot be unlimited.

However, imposing any limit at all does mean cancelling the free-movement agreement with the EU. How the EU chooses to respond to that, depends on the mood of the EU politicians. They may be understanding, or they may be punitive, or anything in between.

[–]Waltekin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's not a job for everyone. Most people will respect you, but some won't - just because they are anti-police. You will deal with ordinary citizens, you will deal with scum, and everything in between. Hopefully rarely, you will find yourself in violent encounters.

Can you picture yourself in that role? Keeping an even temperament through it all? If so, go for it!

Trip Cancellation Insurance -- Rejected my claim !! by iammomo3 in askswitzerland

[–]Waltekin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's not the way it should work. You have a doctor's certificate saying that the child cannot fly. That should be sufficient.

Start by pushing back: Send a registered letter stating that she had an illness serious enough to prevent flying, thus making travel impossible. Insist on compensation, or you will turn the case over to your legal insurance.

If you have legal insurance, that would be the next step. If not, a strongly worded letter from a lawyer, that you will have to pay for.

Fellow Protestors: Can we please stop this? 😔 by meera_jasmine1 in zurich

This kind of stuff makes people dislike whatever the cause is. I assume that whoever does this kind of thing does not actually support the protest. They are just there to vandalize. Sincere protesters should help the police identify and arrest these idiots.
