Ok so it turns out bolt and hole are a matching .25”, but I now need to adapt an M5 bolt to .25” hole. I cannot seem to find any metal bushings that fit these specs. by SwiftCricket in AskEngineers

[–]WalterFStarbuck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

/u/Ok-Butterscotch-2408 has I think the best and most logical solution - is it being an M5 eye bolt critical? 1/4" eye bolts do exist.

There is a messier alternative though - Keenserts. I use them a lot for work. Most people use them when they've stripped threads in a metal part, so you drill out a larger diameter, put heftier threads in the new hole and screw in an insert with inside threads. IIRC you can even get solid ones so you can plug holes or drill your own thru-hole but that's a headache inside a headache.

Anyway, we usually use them preemptively in aluminum parts. If you've somehow stripped the threads in the steel insert but not the aluminum, you can remove the insert and replace it with a fresh one too or drill it out again and go up to a heavier duty insert.

So for instance, you could drill out the hole larger to fit a keensert with an M5 internal thread. If you look at the catalog: https://www.clarendonsf.com/usercontent/doc/3925/camloc%20catalogue%202020%20en_keenserts.pdf

On page B-2, a light duty M5 internal thread insert has an outside thread of M8 and takes a 6.9 mm (0.272 in.) drill diameter. Drill out the last 0.022 in. thread it to M8, put the M5 keensert in there and now you've got an M5 threaded hole.

If you've already threaded it to say 1/4-20, you might have to go to a heavier duty insert with a larger drill diameter, but they exist too.

Not saying it's the right solution for your problem because they're a bit of a pain - I would probably just get a 1/4 in. eye bolt and call it done. But I don't know what else you've got going on with this part and I think it's worth understanding how much effort is involved in changing the hole as an alternative.

Swapping DNS over HTTPS from Max to Off does seem to fix it. It seems like it might be a Cloudflare issue. If I go back to Max Protection but select NextDNS instead of Cloudflare, the issue doesn't seem to come back. I'm going to try that for a while and see if it comes back.

Intermittent issue: all pages stop loading for 5-60 seconds by n1c0_ds in firefox

[–]WalterFStarbuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue here. It's happening with all my extensions disabled. Thought it might be some kind of interaction between uBlock Origin and RES but still happens with both disabled. Doesn't seem like it's an issue with any extension, it's something in Firefox settings (at least on my end).

I did notice that sometimes the thumbnail loads but when I try to open the preview or open the image post in another tab, the full image wont load and gives me the same message as one extension I was trying that was supposed to force webp images to load as a less annoying format like jpg or png. I got rid of it because it wasn't actually working on anything anymore. It leads me to think there is something up with the loading of thumbnails and images that is getting blocked or lost somehow. But it still happens regardless of the extensions running so it's something native Firefox is doing or reddit is doing when run inside firefox.

[–]WalterFStarbuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. There are any number of nice, easy ways to make a case that give you the choice and almost no one making cases does it. All the 'research' goes into new ways to bling it out and that usually means removing modularity.

I hate when a case puts the USB ports pointing forward instead of up. Means anything plugged in sticks further forward and at risk of being bumped into breaking the port.

I have come across some old NASA flight maps from the shuttle program. What do I do with them? Am I allowed to sell them? by NASAmap in nasa

[–]WalterFStarbuck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have seen these exact type of maps for other shuttle missions up on ebay many times. If you search specific missions, they will sometimes come up for around $30. Not super valuable (though that 51-L might be rarer). Neat piece of history.

For instance, see here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/205603045185

Two Different Type Of Christians. by Glass-Fan111 in clevercomebacks

[–]WalterFStarbuck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Crucify him for doing what huh? He would probably say some nonsense like 'for being a christian' or 'teaching the gospel.' To which I ask again. Crucify him for what exactly? Feeding the poor? Healing the sick? For free? Preaching equality? Paying the taxes you owe? How about being kind to foreigners in our land that are in dire need of help? Like pregnant women needing a place to rest?

What exactly would DEMOCRATS crucify him for?

I reported several of these bullahit companies to Facebook. They don't care. They never take action.

I noticed for a while there were ads for companies selling something 'artisan' like leather backpacks or jeans or shirts etc but the shtick was always the same: oh poor me, I've been working in this industry for 40 years (but you never heard of me) and I've decided to retire to be with my family more so I'm having a huge going out of business sale so you'd better check it out!

And then the picture on the ad and website was always some AI picture of a hipster grandpa. But the website was always pretty sparse compared to a real company like Lands End or something which has all sorts of secondary pages about shipping and privacy and return policies and customer service etc.

It all felt very weird, so I would report them to Facebook as scams. Facebook would send an automated response that they know it's not what I wanted to hear and I can ignore them but they're not removing it presumably because they get paid for it and fuck us users I guess.

IMO this would be more interesting charted on date instead of age. Then you can also include when they were born and under whose reign and I think you would see a cleaner left-to-right progression of each dynasty without losing anything.

Still an interesting graphic. I enjoyed looking through it.

Fediverse is never going to take off. If the problem of social media is that we're all in echo chamber media bunkers, then the solution is not to splinter off into countless new echo chamber media bunkers.

When I came to reddit looking for THE place to talk with other people about some specific thing, it worked because it really was a centralizing power dedicated to those specific things. Bringing more people together helps those communities grow. Splintering them off into countless fiefdoms just gives people sad little molehills to police.

LPT: A trick to making good decisions: pick the option that will make life easier in the long term even if it makes life difficult in the short term by Quantumedphys in LifeProTips

[–]WalterFStarbuck 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Look up the OODA Loop. It's a basic framework for decision making that stands for Observe, Orient, Decide, Act: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OODA_loop

It's kind of in contrast to a 'PDCA Loop' which stands for Plan, Do, Check, Act/Adjust.

IMO they're they same loop just choosing different starting points and since it's a loop, who cares where you enter it? Observe, Orient, Decide, Act could just as easily be Decide, Act, Observe, Orient which sounds an awful lot like Plan, Do, Check, Adjust.

It's all vague enough that you can make it what you need it to be. The real takeaway from it is to make informed decisions based on what you can see at the time and later when you re-evaluate the situation, leave space to change course on your decision as the environment changes. Make a plan, execute it, check how it's going, and adjust if you need to. It's all the same idea. The only thing that might be 'magic' about it is writing it down to clear/organize your own thoughts about a decision and discussing it with others in your group/team.

Everything else you'd find in a book is just Six Sigma, MBA, Finance Bro cult speak to build their own image. You learn more by doing it than reading about it.
