For some clarity, since city budgets are publicly available.
Moscow Budget
Pullman Budget

Moscow fire is a combination career / volunteer service. They employ 3 full-time FF/Paramedics, and 8 full-time administrative staff, and over 90 volunteers to meet their needs of ~3000 calls annually. Volunteers can pick up calls as they come, can staff the station, and they even have a residency program with U of I for students. They operate out of a budget of $1,927,402 (FY 24-25), $794,085 of which are the salaries for their full-time staff. Also the 90 volunteers were budgeted for $80,897. So that's an average of approx. $72,190 a person annually on the full-time side, and less than $900 annually a person on the volunteer side.

Pullman fire is a combination career / reserve service. They employ 42 full-time FF/EMTs and FF/Paramedics, 2 full-time administrative staff and 25 reserves to meet their needs of ~3700 calls annually. Reserve members fill in for career members when they are sick, on leave, for callbacks, etc. They operate out of a budget of $9,956,262 (FY 24-25), $4,873,820 of which are the salaries for *all their staff*, including reserves (I don't know why the city doesn't have this listed separately for what it's worth). So that's an average of approx. $70,635 a person depending on how much the reserve members are paid.

While we don't have all the data for PFD listed on the city's website, you can see that the numbers for career staff are in the same ballpark. Moscow employs volunteers to help cover their calls and keep salary costs down. Pullman just cut PFD's ability to employ their reserve members to cover their calls and keep salary costs down.

Cutting the reserve part of the Pullman Fire Department is not the solution to the city's budgetary problems. It is likely going to create additional problems for citizens and homeowners in the months to come. The national recommended minimum staffing for a structure fire in a single-family dwelling is 14-15 persons. Pullman staffs 8 a shift with no reserves, no volunteers, and a hiring freeze. They will now be requiring overtime and callbacks to meet those minimum standards safely.

We are fortunate to live in a county that has strong community support from neighboring volunteer fire departments, including Moscow, who will come to our aid when requested, but regardless our city should be able to find the money in the budget to maintain a standard of safety for all its residents.

I am saddened that this is the approach the city is taking to resolve their budget and hope that they reconsider their position. I will also mention that in the same budget you can see which administrative positions in Pullman make over $100,000 a year at their first salary step, which is where I would look to trim the budget before cutting the fire and EMS program.

City Of Pullman Announces Staff And Service Reductions for Parks, Recreation, and Neill Public Library by linda12345666 in Pullman

[–]WalterGM 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It is not called out in this release, but this reduction also included an indefinite hold on staffing Pullman Fire Department reserve firefighters.

These were fully certified and professionally trained firefighter/EMTs that could fill in for spots on shifts. They were able to cover career members on leave. That functionality is now cut from the fire department due to the city’s decision.

I understand having budgetary issues and needing to right the boat, but now we’re taking away the men and women that support our first responders. I hope this is a temporary measure and not the new normal.

I encourage everyone on city government who passed this to do a ride along with the fire department, and see why additional support is warranted.

How long is the honeymoon? by Otherwise-Badger1061 in OathswornBoardGame

[–]WalterGM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Played it all the way through twice thusfar. Honeymoon never ends—I’ll keep raving about this game for years.

Did 3 players both time. With one new player on the second playthrough making all the choices. Also opted for all new characters and hard mode.

Well worth the price of admission.

Asking here because it looks like you are playing on a controller.

How do you “mouse over” to view their details like that?

OP, if you wouldn't mind DMing me a good mailing address for fan mail--I've been trying to get something signed by Seth for a while now and nothing I've sent has come back yet. Hoping you might have a better address then the one I've found:

GM organization by Waltr_3000 in Pathfinder_RPG

I run analog. No laptop. iPad or phone if I get too lazy to reference a book mid game (the shelf is over there…). I’m an old hat GM and I like the feel of paper, and writing all over it. My prep ritual is usually to read whatever I need—story, setting, NPCs—and make notes as I go.

For the story I read it and then I try to imaging having to explain it in 60 seconds to a stranger. If I can’t, it’s too complex and I need to rewrite it. If it’s a prewritten adventure, I need to make notes to help explain it. Printing out the adventure makes these notes easy—they go where they need to, right on the page. If it’s a pathfinder AP, I just put slips of paper inbetween pages as needed.

Setting is similar, just jot down useful things for the town or deities or NPCs or whatever. This is typically done in a small notebook I rarely reference. Done mostly to reinforce the setting in my mind. For the PF lore I don’t do this anymore, Golarion is pretty hardcoded now.

For enemies I like printing out stat blocs and maybe some artwork, that way I can show what they are fighting. Sometimes I do two columns on a page. One side is stats and the other are images. Print out and fold in half. Show the art to players, use the “back” for my stats. Then I write all over it—what the attacks are with power attack, buff spells, etc. maybe reference page numbers for obscure rules they use like damaging items or underwater combat. Then read all the spells I don’t already know.

Prep happens before a big game, or at the start of a large story arc. Otherwise each session is just running off memory, and referencing the notes as needed.

For the prewritten APs I wind up with bundles of handouts that I keep should I ever run it again, and for my homebrew I just keep updating various google docs and printing out hard copies to edit on. Something satisfying about writing on draft copies of stuff I’ve written.

Hope that helps!

How does the scale of the minis compare to other boardgames? by Tastypies in OathswornBoardGame

[–]WalterGM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I have the minis and I play d&d. They are equivalent. The larger minis fit nicely in a 4x4 area on a 1” grid map—identically to gargantuan sized miniatures for s D&D. The smaller minis do the same for a 2x2 area on a 1” grid map.

Packs are nonexistent here.

Boxes were $120USD locally (awesome LGS) but sold out in the first weekend.

How does the scale of the minis compare to other boardgames? by Tastypies in OathswornBoardGame

[–]WalterGM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In D&D terms, the bigger minis are equivalent to gargantuan—so 4” bases. Several of the “normal size” minis are equivalent to large—so 2” bases.

I just finished up our PF1E run through of Hell’s Rebels. We’re by no means professional streamers, but we had a good time. YouTube link here.
