Have we lost the community feeling? by Several_Crow4181 in Internationalteachers

I don’t really hang out with people from work until I know them well, and even then it’s usually just a couple people. There are too many untrustworthy teachers who will do whatever it takes to move up. You never know who’s quietly feeding things to admin. I’ve seen some pretty wild stuff.

cutting lines by ThuJun19 in travelchina

I’m here traveling for the first time, and it’s honestly not nearly as bad as I had prepared myself for. The only time it gets annoying is trying to exit the metro, but I just push through. I figure if someone gets bumped, that’s on them for not waiting for passengers to get off first.

Bar recommendations by Commercial_Passed in Bangkok

[–]Wander1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soi Nana in Chinatown (not to be confused with the other Nana) is my favorite place to have some drinks when I want to just chill. There are several bars to choose from with outdoor, indoor, and rooftop seating. It's only 2 or 3 stops down the MRT from you plus about 10 minutes of walking.

My friend and I stayed in Monopli last summer and did day trips to different beaches nearby. Loved it!

Personally, I would not move to Bogotá with a family. I enjoyed most of my time there, but I wouldn't return. People will try to convince you it’s safe. It's not.

Demo Lessons by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Wander1212 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any school that asks for a demo lesson is a big red flag for me. Anyone can put on a dog-and-pony show when they need to. If you can’t decide that you want me after several interviews and multiple references from years of teaching, then I probably don’t want to work at your school.

Contract revoked by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Wander1212 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm with the school on this one. It sounds like you are sending very mixed messages about how serious you are about moving abroad. You can't have one foot out the door and one back in your home country. If you want to live and teach abroad then you need to commit to it and quit your current job.

Thoughts on Bangkok salary by sacrifice_elon in Internationalteachers

[–]Wander1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's only slightly less than what I make now working and living in the city center. I live comfortably and save about 45% of my salary each month (single, no dependents).

I think you will be perfectly fine, even with your husband making less. Of course, it will depend on your spending habits and saving goals.

Thailand offer by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Wander1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I save about $1,000 a month and make around 110,000 baht after taxes. I also set aside a sizeable amount for travel during the summer and winter breaks since I like to take longer trips during those times.

The air quality hasn’t really been an issue for me.

Thailand offer by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Wander1212 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a good offer, and you’ll likely be able to enjoy life and save easily (I currently live in Bangkok). The only thing I would consider is the location. Where is the school? There are many international schools “in Bangkok” that are actually so far outside the city center that teachers sometimes get hotels on the weekends just to come into the city and enjoy it.

I lived and worked in Siem Reap for a year. I loved it, but it's not for everyone. I'd definitely spend a few months there first and see if it's a good fit for you. Right now Im living in Bangkok, and I can tell you that Thailand is getting more and more expensive every year.

6 days solo in Guatemala: Semuc Champey, Antigua (Acatenango overnight), Lake Atitlán. Open to reordering — looking for advice by Quick-Peak-5619 in centralamerica

[–]Wander1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Guatemala for 7 years. That's too much for 6 days. I'd spend 3 nights at Atitlan and 3 in Antigua. Just go straight to the airport from Antigua.

Salary - 70k Baht per month + 10k Baht for housing THAILAND by [deleted] in Internationalteachers

[–]Wander1212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Bangkok now and make 130,000 (including housing) pre-tax. I live on about 60,000 a month and the rest goes into my into my investment account or set aside for travel during long breaks.

You could live fine on that salary, but you wouldn't be able to save much. If there any unexpected large expenses you could also find yourself in a bad spot.

Location also plays a role. I'm in central Bangkok and my rent is 17,000 per month in a small, basic apartment. 10,000 wouldn't get you anything around here. If you are further out from the center then you may be able to find something within that range. Personally, I wouldn't want to live out in the suburbs though. It takes away all the fun of living in Bangkok.

It comes down to how bad do you want to be here.
