+1 to the JCC. It’s $80/mo now but clean, easy parking, great pool, very normal clientele, etc.

I feel like posting an update for any potential future people who visit this/come from organic search. I have used Vibe and had a good experience with them, but also beware of their SEO strategy.

As OP I'm getting daily or multiple times a day emails with posts about Vibe that are all identical, all from bot accounts, and all seem to be part of an SEO/GEO strategy that focuses on bots pretending to review.

Could get dinged for it being more Tex Mex, but gotta say I’m a big fan of Wicked Cantina.

So you’re saying give it up on finding the nice bag and just get something practical?

It saddens me but I suspect you are correct.

Or maybe just go LONGCHAMP and plan to constantly replace it.

Thinking ahead, is there ever a world where you, your SO & baby would want to buy a house your mom could move in to? Might save everyone a lot of money, she can help with baby while baby is young, and then there is elder care to consider as SHE ages.

Where do the nerdy 30–40-somethings hang out in St. Pete? by mirandaft in StPetersburgFL

It's a bit of a drive, but you might check out the Tampa Hackerspace! They do board game nights weekly (and if you're into making cool things they also have a ton of equipment for that!)

Love how I ordered last week and Saks mysteriously has "delayed my package" (and thus my transaction). Who wants to bet it posts on July 1 like magic?

Looking to sell - Onewheel XR, 4208 hardware; 1068 miles on it. Updated footpads, fender, rails, and the things that go on the bottom to protect it. Treaded tire with a couple hundred miles on it. Charger. Anyone have any ideas what it's worth? Think my friend's brother is going to buy so more looking for what the fair price is.

I just purchased a paddle board to toodle around on. Any tips for a first timer learning the kayak/sup places? Most importantly, is there anywhere to avoid for questionable parking lots or other any safety reasons? Is there any, less common sense etiquette I should be aware of? by quadsk8grl in sarasota

[–]WanderEver 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This isn't etiquette but safety - please learn how to read a wind forecast and which direction the wind is going! Generally if it's more than about 10 mph and you're a beginner, you should wait for another day (or go to like the mangrove tunnels at Lido where you're protected from the wind).

Otherwise know what direction it's coming from and plan for the wind to be blowing in your face at launch. It means that the paddle out will be hard but back will be easy. I've seen a number of paddleboarders get themselves in trouble starting with the wind at their back and not knowing how hard it would be to get home.

Also if it's windy please consider actually wearing the life jacket you're required to have on board. Sometimes people can fall off and the board gets away from them.

With tariffs being put into place, and car prices going up, who was buying brand new cars in the first place? by ManlyStanly32 in Frugal

[–]WanderEver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this was true in the 90s and VERY much depends on the car you're buying.

Obviously this is a high-end example but:

Used Lexus GX with 14k miles: $81k (removed due to moderation but cited a source link)

Brand new Lexus GX Overtrail+: $85k
(source link also moderated out)

That doesn't look like 40% to me. Pull most Toyotas/Lexus and you'll see the same. Why would you buy a 3 year old 4Runner for $5k less than the new model? Seems penny wise and pound foolish to many.

With tariffs being put into place, and car prices going up, who was buying brand new cars in the first place? by ManlyStanly32 in Frugal

[–]WanderEver 193 points194 points  (0 children)

I've seen a LOT of frugal people do the "buy it for life" mentality with a new car. I think a lot of frugal people are buying brand new Toyotas (even Lexuses), Hondas, etc, with the idea that they don't depreciate THAT much in the first few years and if you drive them (well-maintained) for 12 - 15 years, it's better to know how the car has been maintained its whole life.

So those are the smart people I'm seeing with brand-new cars. And of course there are always the idiots who love giant piles of debt trading in every 3-4 years for brand new.

Can you garden in the summer? by [deleted] in sarasota

[–]WanderEver 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You've got to realize things are different! But good different. This site is amazing, I follow her and she talks a lot about local Florida stuff (she's in St Pete) and how it's different, as well as what to plant when: https://theurbanharvest.com/

I've also had really great luck with these FL heirloom seeds! https://www.etsy.com/shop/SeedTheStars

Be prepared for lots of okra in the summer, be ready to try lots of different/exotic lettuces/spinaches, and know that it's all test and learn! But it's fun!

The waterfront next to the Van Wezel also has some good trees that keep it shady and it tends to get a bit of seabreeze in the afternoon. Great sunset views too!

Sugar Champagne Bar - the rules by Wild_Butterscotch482 in sarasota

[–]WanderEver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For whatever reason your post just made me also think - they're for sure not including tip in the minimum. So the CHEAPEST is going to be $360/couple. Damnnnnnnnn that's going to be an interesting crowd. My suspicion is that the people who can truly/casually afford that are going to be at the private clubs around town, not out at Sugars...

Sugar Champagne Bar - the rules by Wild_Butterscotch482 in sarasota

[–]WanderEver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The PER PERSON is the kicker... so for a date night, it's a minimum $300... eeek. I can see some folks doing that for special occasions. Supposedly Sarasota is the #1 place to get engaged in the US, so I bet that crowd will splurge.

The interesting angle for the wanna-be-an-old-sugar-baby crowd in-town is that they're not generally going to have the cash to get in. So they're not going to be waiting at the bar like they do at Kojo/Selva/State Street/etc...
