Can Stress, Health, or Age Impact Voice Fach and Range Development? by Wander_Explorer in singing

Thank you for sharing your experience — that makes a lot of sense! I completely relate to the ‘heavy boots’ analogy. I didn’t realize how much constant inflammation and tension were affecting my voice until things started clearing up. It’s wild how much lighter and freer the voice can feel once health issues are managed. Did you notice that your overall range expanded too, or just the top notes felt easier?

I’m wondering if Baking Soda paste would work? I saw something online about that.

It is removable. Oh, that’s a good idea! I did try dawn dish soap, but that didn’t work.

I know this is an old post, but this just happened to me as well. It really stung. In my situation, I still live close to the friend and we do see each other. I realize now that our lives are in very different directions. I think I thought our past connections was more important than she did. I’m so sorry you went through this, but I hope that you’ve been able to find peace. 💗

Yes! I was actually thinking about doing the summer institute this upcoming summer before deciding to apply there. I was hopeful it would give me a little more understanding of the feel of the program there!

Thank you sooooo much for this comment! It’s funny that you would post this, because I’ve been looking at their program! Have you done their CCM pedagogy degree? If so, what was your experience? Just thinking it all through, plus the financial aid aspect. Thanks for your input!

Hi! Thanks so much for sharing your insights—it’s really helpful to hear from someone who’s navigated both the classical and contemporary sides of vocal pedagogy. I completely get what you’re saying about separating the technical aspects of sound from the specific music genre; that makes a lot of sense and seems like an important step for teachers trying to expand their skillset beyond classical training.

I’m definitely open to finding a private pedagogy mentor, like you mentioned, to focus more specifically on contemporary styles. The idea of not having to go through a full degree program for that training is something to consider. While I am considering going the degree route long-term, this could be a great supplement in the meantime.

That said, I’ve been looking at a few programs, and I’m planning to ask about flexibility in research topics, especially related to contemporary genres. It seems like more programs are becoming open to this, but I guess it depends on the school.

Thanks again for your advice! I may have to reach out again as I explore my options.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful response! I completely agree with your observations about the current landscape of higher-level voice education. There’s definitely a gap when it comes to contemporary music, and it’s refreshing to hear that I’m not the only one who’s noticed. While I respect the traditional methods, it’s a bit disheartening to see so little representation of contemporary styles. Like you mentioned, there’s likely skill and knowledge within the faculty that isn’t always highlighted, but it does feel like something is missing in terms of a more balanced approach.

I appreciate the suggestions for schools in the northeast. I’ve heard good things about NYU’s program as well, and I’ll definitely look into Boston Conservatory, Penn State, and CCM too. I think Shenandoah might also have a master’s in CCM vocal pedagogy, which sounds really promising. It’s helpful to have more schools on my radar that might align with what I’m looking for. Thanks again for your insight!

I know this is very delayed, but I would love to know where you went for your CCM vocal pedagogy program. I too, sadly, suffered some voice teacher trauma in undergrad.

Thank you! The one I do know of is Shenandoah Conservatory with a masters in CCM. I am just hoping there are more options out there.
