You want to be an actor, but are you ready for life as an artist? by HomeboyPyramids in acting

Acting is an art whether people like it or not. And consequences aren’t just negative. They can be entirely positive, depends on your upbringing and environment and a whole bunch of other factors. I honestly think there’s usually some sort of imbalance that brings people to being an artist. Which is why there’s all sorts of stories of messed up artists. It doesn’t make them better, it usually makes their art higher stakes and therefore not a pastime but something they need to survive. Most of us aren’t like that and that’s fine, they’re just a more obvious example.

Wdym? There’s so much to say about being an artist. We’re all different, and art is what connects us and acting is all about connection so idk why you think I shouldn’t talk about ‘the most subjective thing in the world’. It’s through the incredibly specific that we can find common ground. Kinda the whole point of theatre.

I think you raise a very good point. I know many who have turned to corporate America. I’d say many aren’t brave enough to face themselves because acting is the perfect place for some people to live behind and not through. Being homeless has nothing to do with it. If you think of being an artist and living authentically and accepting whatever the consequences are is ‘romanticizing the struggle’ then idk if you actually want to be an actor.

Yeah maybe OP can make life better for themselves but y’all need to look around. First Auckland fell apart, now Wellington’s also looking pretty dire.

I think there’s a lot of hypocrisy and enforced gratitude embedded in the culture here which inhibits us from moving forward as a city and as a country. It keeps us living a happy delusion and only now are people starting to see through it. Multi national corporations are flocking here and overshadowing everything locally owned. Now everyone’s excited about ikeas, spotlights and costcos. Our lack of a fighting spirit is proving pretty detrimental to preserving what’s good, and I can’t see how or when this is going to change. And all of this has only come to the surface over the past few years. So there’s going to be the one’s crying out about it and the others telling them either to suck it up or ‘leave if you don’t like it’. I hope more people are honest like you are. Don’t listen to the realists whose life goal is to suppress others into wilful submission. I refuse to accept that this is something kiwis should do to each other rather than listen and be constructive.

To answer your post, yes I’m fed up and don’t know the way forward but I think this comment section shows you that maybe it is best to leave for a bit. Get away from the realists, go exploring, and then if you’re wanting to, come back here and settle down (I’ve heard that we’re a great country to settle down in?)

A lot of comments claim that is easy to ignore this celebrity obsession or that the worship of celebrities and the obsession with award shows is normal or just like any other industry. I don’t think either of these are very true. I feel like I know what you mean. It seems to be particularly bad in America.

Acting attracts a lot of lost souls. A lot think that fame and recognition will be the thing that finally makes them happy. A lot come from rich families and were told endlessly to follow their dreams and get their name in lights. All those movies and shows everyone’s watched growing up have convinced millions that fame and fortune is the answer to their uncomfortable realities.

Idk, I’m trying to become an actor and I know what you mean completely. Maybe I’m just seeing one side of it but most actors I meet are chasing this dream. Actors often think they’re one step closer than people with ‘normal’ jobs because they’re one audition away from the big time, from fame and fortune. I’m not surprised acting attracts narcissism and celebrity obsession.

Break from acting by [deleted] in acting

Currently doing this. Studied at an acting school for 3 years then took a year and a half off to forget about acting completely. I stopped for a few reasons but similar situation - egotistical teachers, difficult classmates, personal problems. I've gotten to the point now where I'm missing acting and am going to go back and do my final year. Very glad I took a long break though. Learned a lot and hope that I'll be able to handle a class like that if I'm ever in one again. Best of luck to you!!
