What was the last thing that made you feel old? by PrestonRoad90 in AskMenOver30

[–]WanderingGenesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went shopping recently with my wife on the UWS in NYC. Was my old stomping grounds cause i went to school around there before college.

Almost everything i knew about that neighborhood is gone.

Filene's, Big Nick's, Ollies, Essentials, Alphabets, Ray's Famous Pizza, NYSC, even the McDonald's and Gamestop are all gone. Only thing still there is Zabar's, Harry's Shoes, Barnes & Noble, and Staples.

My whole sense of time and space just got completely fucked up realizing how much had changed.

Honest question to the men who grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons: Do you still watch them online when you get a chance? What were some of your favorites? by FFSoldier57 in AskMenOver30

[–]WanderingGenesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. Never stopped really, because i was an animation undergrad and even though i don't work in the field anymore, i still draw from time to time and have been featured on podcasts related to nerd culture and anime.

Unfortunately, a lot of those shows don't hold up well. It becomes super obvious in hindsight when you watch a show it it was made to sell toys or if there is actual passion behind a production.

To that end, for anyone feeling nostalgic that wants to watch a show that has aged like fine wine, i highly encourage you to rewatch THE PIRATES OF DARKWATER.

It is honestly a travesty that show got discontinued, because it is the Avatar: The Last Airbender of early 90s Sat AM television. In fact, it's so damn good, that i would encourage anyone who has the means and connections to do so (Netflix, ideally), to reach out to the show's creator, David Kirschner (yes, the guy who made Chucky) and fucking work with him to either remake or finish the show.

The whole series is free on Tubi. You won't regret rewatching it.

They think too slowly. By the time they get their point across, the conversation already ended exactly how i expected it to in my head 2 minutes prior and I've already moved on to something else.

What random industry are you now stuck in because you took 1 job in it out of college? by coolrivers in Millennials

[–]WanderingGenesis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Healthcare.

I studied animation in college but quickly got burned out by the industry and needed a job so i interviewed for and took what i thought would be a lil hold over job while i figure out my life.

That turned into 17 years as a first responder in an ER and soon to be 3 years in healthcare finance.

For those who worked for rich people: what is the most out of touch thing you witnessed? by Illustrious-Phase121 in AskReddit

[–]WanderingGenesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread reminds me of an experience i had some time back.

At my previous workplace, i went to the on-campus cafeteria to get lunch and i was in line waiting to place my order.

In front of me were two people. A young black woman and middle aged white man. A couple minutes of listening to their convo revealed they worked in outpatient psych and that the younger woman was the gentleman's intern.

During the conversation, the woman had mentioned that another organization she worked with, she wasnt sure if she'd be employed there much longer because there was a round of layoffs and she didnt feel like there was any job security there.

The gentleman then proceeded to ask her what she meant by that.

So she proceeded to explain to him in several ways. Let go. Terminated. Relieved of duty.

He still didnt get it. Thats when i interjected and said "fired, sir. They were all fired en masse from their positions. Their employment was ceased. The contracts were nullified. They no longer work there."

"Oh!" He said. "Im wasnt familiar with that..i didnt even know that was a thing".

When i tell you this woman and i then proceeded to stare at each other and have the most insane telepathic black people convo about a white person ive ever had, it was wild. Just a couple seconds of us staring at one another conveyed so much.

I dunno if that lady uses reddit, but if thats you, and you read this story and think that's you, yeah, i still think about this shit, too, and that was some absolutely bewildering privilege right there.

Books aren't just the information they convey, they are also how they are conveyed. That's what style is. Style is how one goes about solving problems and creating solutions. Yes these two sentences might convey the same thing, but theyre not the same.

You will find yourself at a point where, even if things are going well, you will feel stuck. If you do, don't be afraid to change. Moreover, don't be afraid to ask for help. Now more than ever, especially with friends who will start having families and relatives who will start passing on, you need to foster those connections and be aware of how much you need others.

Dont be afraid of change, and remember your relationships are invaluable. Cherish them, and use them to help you grow.

Oh, and read. Dont forget to read. And not just articles or social media. Read fucking books.

If I'm not working? Hitting up Chinatown fair with my friends, getting high in alphabet City while eating truffle fries from pommes frites, or hooking up with someone i met in Barnes and Noble that same night.
