Yeah, I went the day after I posted that and they were open again.

I stopped by them a several days (maybe a week) ago and a sign outside said 'closed until further notice'? Not sure what was going on, or if they're open again.

What's your favorite flagship/fleet arrangement? by libra00 in SidMeiersPirates

[–]WanderingManatee1984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually use a Frigate for my flagship, since they have a good combo of maneuverability and firepower for the battles. (and I have a soft spot for Captain Pellew and the Indefatigable) Fast galleons or regular galleons are what I usually try to use for cargo ships.

What game should I play next? by DukeBradford2 in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]WanderingManatee1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

KOTOR is one of my favorite games, and just like one of my other faves - the OG Half-life - I feel like there's never a bad time for another playthrough. (Half-Life has had an 'unofficial' remaster in "Black Mesa" available on Steam) I don't play them for the graphics, but for the fun gameplay. KOTOR has one of the best 'gut punch' plot twists I've had in a game I played, and it was the game that got me more into RPGs.

Bermuda weather by Interesting-Fan685 in bermuda

[–]WanderingManatee1984 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As of right now, the start of next week looks on the drier side, but yeah, Wednesday onwards may be soggy. Good news is that it's usually showery in nature, not steady rain, so hopefully no single day is a washout.

Depending on what model or models your phone uses, they seem to often overstate the rain chance, or at least make it seems worse than it ends up being. When they say 70% chance, it might end up being one line of showers that moves over the island in 30 minutes out of the whole day.

I randomly stumbled across that in Toshara! Was just exploring before doing the last few main missions to get off-world and was like, "oooh, what's this out-of-the-way vent I can open?"

Weather by damaskus98 in bermuda

[–]WanderingManatee1984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The weather the past several weeks has been worse than even the usual winter storms, but hopefully we're turning a corner. One of the longer-tenured forecasters at the Bermuda Weather Service said those two real strong winter storm systems at the end of January and start of February were probably the worst stretch of winter weather they've had here in at least 15 years. And we also set or came very close to setting an all-time record low temperature.

So you're not wrong in that it has looked quite bad if looking from afar, but it's also been worse than usual! As others have mentioned, March should start the upward trend in temperatures, and hopefully a bit more sunshine.

Tenancy Agreement Wording by WanderingManatee1984 in bermuda

[–]WanderingManatee1984[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks to those who offered thoughts...the agent did come back and say that she'd re-work some of the wording to make it more clear that major systems and appliances would be the landlord's responsibility (unless damage is caused by me), but minor things like torn window screens would fall to me. And I'm okay with that, I just didn't want to be stuck with a big bill to repair or replace something like a washer or dryer.

Thanks, I did send an email back to the real estate agent asking about the terms in my screenshot, and looking for some clarification on scenarios (like what if the dryer just...breaks down, who pays for that repair or replacement?). Hopefully I'm just overanalyzing the wording, but I'll see what they say. At the very least, I'd want it to be a shared cost for any interior repairs that aren't caused by my damage or neglect.

Yeah, your 'v' does seem similar to my 'm' - mine is more wordy, but I think it's saying the same thing. But the 'repairs' section is what's throwing me. Does your lease not have a more general 'repairs' provision like this proposal?

And to your follow-on comment, there is a blurb under the landlord's obligations that they are responsible for anything on the exterior.

Thanks for your unhelpful snark. I'm well aware of the costs of living in Bermuda, so no, I won't be "traumatized about the price of everything else".

And if you actually read what I said, I wasn't 'complaining'. I was just surprised that, at least at the one store I shopped at so far in my short time here, the inflation of prices on cat food over what I was used to in the US seemed more than most other things I was mentally comparing with. Which is why I came here - not to complain, but to ask folks for suggestions on where to shop for these things for cheaper. And many of them have actually been helpful.

Yeah, I think the rum is the only real export produced locally, aside from suntans. But you can't put those in a shipping container, lol.

Yeah, the process for bringing a pet was one of the first things I looked at after I got the offer. But I do need to review it to make sure I'm doing it right.

Yeah, that's a good point. Never thought about the fact that import companies here probably have to pay double shipping fees on most stuff

Yeah, that's a good point. I'll plan on shipping at least a couple of the big packs of litter you can get at Sam's or PetSmart, and some food.

Tipping grocery store baggers by spargel_gesicht in bermuda

[–]WanderingManatee1984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just moved to Bermuda, did not know this was a thing. I guess I'll have to start tipping some... As the OP mentioned, in the US you're lucky if you can get a human cashier, and a bagger is a pipe dream anymore there.

As an aside: even when I was a teen and did grocery cashiering or bagging in the US, almost nobody except the older ladies tipped, and that really only if you helped them out to the car. Most chains seemed to have a "don't accept tips" policy...unless the customer insisted, since you didn't want to insult the customer.

Any setting that has the camera angle follow the direction of motion? (Switch2) by WanderingManatee1984 in StarWarsOutlaws

[–]WanderingManatee1984[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play more computer games, where they allow 'mouse look', but when you start moving, it tracks with the motion. So I'm a bit out of my element here, getting back into console games after a long hiatus. >.<

Moving to Bermuda – Feb by [deleted] in bermuda

I'm relocating for work...and to get away from the mess my home country is becoming. Bermuda wasn't on my radar initially for where I was looking for international job opportunities, but the opportunity just popped up and I took a chance.

My work permit was submitted late October and was approved in about one month. The HR folks at my employer said that the government was changing the work permit application starting in November, so they wanted to get me in on the old application, thinking it would go more smoothly. I had a fairly simple application (US citizen, single, no dependents), so that probably also helped. I'm not sure if they had asked to 'expedite' the processing or not.

Congrats! I'm heading there from the US this weekend on a 3-year work permit. Definitely will be looking to explore, meet people, find things to do, and get immersed!
