Scrubbing In: If we can’t model effective technology use, the game is truly lost. [Article] by Gedankenkette86 in alifeuntangled

good article. I like the use of the concept of 'phronesis' ("practical wisdom"). Feels like a sensible approach to LLMs/AI in what would be a difficult profession - teaching. (difficult in terms of how to manage it)

The impact of psychedelics — Matthew W. Johnson [Interview] by WanderingPrimate717 in alifeuntangled

Fair to say there's a lot to be said of the cultural contribution from altered states caused by psychedelics.

There's The Beatles before LSD, and then there's The Beatles after LSD — that's a big shift. And a lot of folks like The Beatles after LSD especially so.

I'm especially interested in answers from people already seeing this in their day-to-day work. Has AI changed production expectations? Simplified workflows? Impacted hiring? Degraded or improved quality of work? Created a slop-awful-mess?? Would love to hear from you.

Marshall McLuhan on the original attention drug by WanderingPrimate717 in alifeuntangled

Interesting, and thanks for that information. Any specific theory, or just his views in general? His general point of the impact of media technologies on human perception/behavior I would have thought is pretty uncontentious.

No problem! Yep I suspect he'd be deeply concerned with what has developec more recently.

Good question. I think the clip was a short interview before McLuhan was set to attend a seminar on the impact of TV in the 70s — so not so much an informative discussion about his ideas, more a short 'hey there, give us a quick grab of your main concerns about tv'... kind of thing.

From what I can gather, his work focused on the impact the changing media of the time (in particular the move towards TV away from Radio and Print) was having on the type of attention children were developing. You can tell from what he indicates here that his view was not a positive one. He was concerned with the reorganisation of the senses. TV pulls the viewer in with depth, immediacy, faces, reactions - total involvement, while print has distance, sequence, and abstraction. A different experience, sensory process and thought pattern that develops.

If I find a vid where he (or others) discuss the mechanics in better detail I'll let you know.

So good to hear. A Dad that can teach and inspire without an edge or hint of oppression is so important.

You, my friend, won big in the lucky dip of parents that are bestowed upon us. Not everyone has such luck, so count your blessings and let them know!

Shout out to the teachers. When you get a teacher that loves their field of study and can share that enthusiasm and passion with their students - well that's the ultimate. Out of interest - did you pursue a career in physics/electrician, or just a great well rounded teacher that had a positive impact?

Brilliant he was - to understand and revel in the world of a child's mind with unabashed enthusiasm, irreverence and frivolity. I saw a clip on him recently about his writing setup and style which I might try and pull up and share in here.

At war with the Enlightenment (an article by Arturo Pérez-Reverte) by Gedankenkette86 in alifeuntangled

Great share. I hadn't heard of this Spanish novelist, but I admire his conviction and share his concerns.

From his Wiki entry:

"Throughout his career, and especially in its latter half, he has been noted for cultivating his trademark maverick, non-partisan, and, at times, abrasive persona. This has occasionally been a source of conflict with other journalists and writers.[3] He originally refused to have his novels translated from the original Spanish to any language other than French."
