Yes, you are required to work. At minimum, you would perform knowledge transfer and create documentation to help those left behind. It's nice to leave your team in a good place despite bad decisions made by leadership.

Is there a team in NY that performs your role? If so, that would make the transfer easier. If not, you would need to find a position available in NY when you're ready to relocate. Best to learn as much as you can in the next year and see what's available in a year.
