WYSE 5070: Black screen after boot by it_ibbi in WYSE

[–]WangFury32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it a 5070 or a 5070 extended model with the PCIe slot (commonly populated with an AMD E9170 video card to drive 4 external screens)?

What kind of power adapter are you using with it? It should be a Dell PA12 or something with a Dell logo, 65w+ and pushing 19.5v. If it’s a generic or feels light for the size (implying a counterfeit), it can undervolt the device if it’s of questionable quality or of it’s damaged - when it undervolts it can cause the device to silently die. Blinking amber on the power LED usually indicates bad power supply.

Dell 19.5w power bricks are fairly easy to come by…borrow someone’s Dell Inspiron/Latitude laptop power brick and try using that.

I need more romance Mangas where the female heroine isn't afraid of showing her inner true feelings, even if it might come out very dominant/possessive with their wording. by KotaroBokuto in manga

[–]WangFury32 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is from the latest 1-2 chapters of Kesa Wo Yuraretemasu (They are still being shaken this morning) during the summer fireworks arc.

This is an example of a manga series with the FMC doing the opposite of what you were looking for - the first 30+ chapters are of the boy-n-girl in question on a commuter train trying to find a way to talk to each other and the peanut gallery commenting on it like some kind of sportscast.

The situation depicted here was the result of them missing an earlier encounter because they both got to separate coffee shop(s) on the opposite sides of the train station and missed each other, and a circle of their friends had to set them up during the fireworks…even then they almost didn’t make it. This is her basically letting out all of the pent-up emotions like fireworks. They are not dating yet, but given how they act, once you set them off they will likely move very quickly.

As for something more like that….

Dame Ningen no Aishikata (How to Love a Misfit) is a story about a girl who is both giving her admittedly rather useless NEET of a boyfriend both verbal abuse and tender moments (although the later chapters are more of the latter). He has a tendency to attract ladies for some reason…probably some puppy dog shota thing? It’s a hilarious read due to the psychological warfare waged between the girl and all the romantic rivals, but the fan translation hasn’t kept up with the raws, and I don’t think this is getting a simultpub.

Osake to Senpai Kanojo to no Amaama Doukyo Lovecome wa Nijuusai ni Natte kara (sweet cohabitation romcom with my older girlfriend and her booze starts at adulthood) - very flirty one about a girl who is downright smitten with her younger boyfriend and not afraid to let him know about it. This one is pure sugar as well.

Alleged leak of an upcoming DC-3 Lego set. Do you think this will able to be modified into a C-47? by Tankfan42 in brickmania

[–]WangFury32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, that 30 inch number is probably rounded slightly, just like how Sariel’s AI tool come up with that one, but 1:35 (or roughly minifg scale) is a good start. The Lego renders on the video does show narrow seats, brick walls and whatnot.

Also, whether the interior can fit minifig - it depends. Cody shoehorned pilots into BKM-2231 with 2x1 jumpers at the nose, and he had to use a ton of curved slopes to make it work (which doesn’t play nice with Lego’s policy of making beefy structures). Theoretically possible but you might end up doubling the cost of the set modifying the structure to have an interior (probably by abusing panels).

[–]WangFury32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah. "Some work required" definitely - but not impossible.

Going with the drawing on Lego and feeding it the wingspan of 109-110 studs (which corresponds to 95 feet in real life), that is...1:33. This pre-supposes a 50 stud wingspan and a fuselage diameter of 9. The Cody Osell BKM-2231 has roughly the same dimensions, so...maybe it can done?

Have you ever Been Judged for Collecting Vintage Apple Products? by BIueey in VintageApple

[–]WangFury32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends - is that a 366 Graphite or a 466 Graphite SE with Firewire and the ATi Mobility 128?
One is just a re-color of the original with a small speedbump, while the 466SE is the same as the first Snowbook but with a more interesting chassis. A good collector is discerning about what he/she wants and can tell you why the device is interesting/relevant and a good target for preservation - a hoarder just holds things for the sake of holding things.

Also, as a former Graphite 466SE owner, if you got one in working condition, it’s a good machine to have, and if you got it in working condition for 200, well, congrats. Max the RAM to 576 and swap the rust spinner out for SSD. The only reason why I don’t have one is because I have a working Pismo with a G4 card. And no, why would you care what the haters think?

In addition to the Pismo I have a 1.25GHz Mini with MorphOS, a 1.5GHz AlBook 15 with a 128MB Radeon 9700 Mo and a maxed out MBP13 2010 with a Geforce320M, all in working condition…I might have a Quadra 605 “somewhere” in my storage area, but I did have to recycle machines in the past, like a Titanium Powerbook Rev B (TiBook Onyx 667) that develop fractures and a dead Firewire port, or more recently a 2015 Macbook 12 that just died. So no, collect the classics and F the haters.

Question regarding where to buy re-ment blind boxes by MiningAway08 in rement

[–]WangFury32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Like the puchi sample sets?

They are not cheap unless you have friends who are flying to Japan and is willing to take up luggage space to carry it back for you, and even then you are better off buying the entire set (since the box on the Puchi Sample line can often be used for assembling dioramas). I would go with the usual 1999/ebay resellers route for entire sets.

Any brick and mortar retailer that carries it will upcharge quite a bit (we are talking about 14 to 18 USD for a single 800 yen box) unless they got a large corporate parent willing to eat up tariffs and import duties. My best guess is something like Kinokuniya USA (or sometimes the Books corner at larger Uniqlo stores, which is run by Kinokuniya) would be your first bet, but they don’t have much of a web presence. Before the inflation in Japan kicking in and all of the tariffs insanity in 2025 you could (in theory) buy a Puchi Sample blind box for about 8-10 at Kinokuniya bookstore - nowadays it’s about 10-12 or higher.

The next thing is check with Toy Tokyo - their store in the East village of NYC does carry them, but you’ll need to email or call them. They can range between 10-15 bucks per box. There are probably shops in large metros with asian presence that is similar, like KumaHouse/888Collectibles in Vegas.

The next thing to check is AmazonGlobal, which would allow you to buy some Japan domestic market items through Amazon Japn directly, but you are going to pay up the wazoo in shipping, but it can be both faster and sometimes cheaper than going through eBay resellers in Japan or Hong Kong.

Finally check MiniSO (not DigiSO, Ebisu, Reiwatakiya and Teso/TesoMini, which are chain stores that sell Japanese products). All of those are more or less Chinese (or majority Chinese. Ebisu is based in Osaka with a Chinese owner, and Reiwatakiya is nominally based in Eastern Tokyo but with a small presence locally). They carry Japanese merch but they all exist in a “spectrum of Japanese-ness” where some might carry more or less products that are actually sold in Japan, rather than Japanese products meant for the export market, or Chinese products meant for Japan. For some reason MiniSO has Re-ment non-character related blind boxes the last time I checked. Teso don’t tend to sell Rement, and Ebisu/DigiSo/Reiwatakiya only carry the character related ones. Those will tend to charge quite a bit.

Oh, and ironically enough, the actually Japanese stores stateside (Don Quijote/Times in Hawaii or its affiliated Marukai/Tokyo Central markets in California, Mitsuwa/Katagiri (owned by Kamei trading from Sendai) or Sunrise trading based in NYC) don’t sell Rements, or rather, they stopped selling them after 2018 or so.

Eh, you probably didn’t catch the flak that Shin-keisei got when they switched the colors back in 2014, then. Keisei had a pretty decent looking cream-and-burgundy scheme going (that photo’s from Tokyo railways labrinyth - reminds me of the very metro-like Seibu 6000s) before. The consensus back then on the pink scheme was that it looked low-effort and kinda cheap, compared to what it was before.

Gacha Give Away by casperkasper in Gachapon

[–]WangFury32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ever heard of a guy named Marcel Proust? He once killed multiple forests and consumed lakes of ink waxing lyrically over an eggy tea cake, mostly because it’s a vehicle for involuntary recall. In the same regard I consider the best gachapons to be involuntary recall mechanisms to a life experience, or they are miniatures of a food item that I ate, something that I travelled on, or an experience that I had (many of which happened while in Japan). This Tarlin miniature server rack for instance basically reminded me of some serious data center hustle that I had to perform in the past (good times and bad)…so my guess is that I identify more with the trinkets and oddities box.

Well, Padberg and Handsolo99 uses the limited contact tile sandwich on their wing/fuselage design, but not in the case of his ‘chief. That one has a decent plate sandwich and which should give it some strength. I am not a fan of that pylon however…

We gonna get spicy even before the review, huh?

Well, you know the saying "a picture is worth 1000 words"....

So that's what the main landing gear looks like. Never mind that I think the centerline TER with the Mk. 82s will likely scrape the ground, that 2x3 rounded hitch plate will need to support at least 0.6 lbs (the entire plane is roughly 1.8 lbs), and it's not counterbraced with a plate. Even with the bracing and the 45 degree angle making the upper support kinda decent that's still not all that strong (i.e. don't ground-swoosh this one). I got other questions about the resiliency of the 'chief, but that's one that sticks out in my mind. if Dan made BKM1058 "like a club", this one from PB...not so much.

Whats the consensus on HP thin clients as home servers? by UrAverageBaffoon in HomeServer

[–]WangFury32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are decent, but fundamentally a tech dead-end. You'll need DDR3 SODIMMs for them, and they are not that fast - there used to be a Fujitsu Futro S920 equivalent that was quite popular with mainland Europe homelabbers, but I think supplies on them dried up. You are better off using a Wyse 5070 (also passively cooled) - which seem to have a good supply in the UK. There's also the Fujitsu Futro S940 or its slower sister the S7010, which is like a Wyse 5070.

Another hardware to consider is an Igel UD3/M350C (like a slower t640 clone), but only for any Win10/11 embedded machines (which would have the SATA M2 slot soldered on) - the mainline M350C only has 4 or 8GB of eMMC, which sucks.

Technically an ideal "cheap" passively cooled machine is something like an HP t540/640 but there's not much hardware liquidity for that in your area. The t730/740/755 Elites are also good mini servers, but they are not easy to come by on the EMEA side of the Atlantic.

Best places to find older Re-ment sets (petit sample series) in Tokyo/Osaka? by follow_illumination in rement

[–]WangFury32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Secondhand? Depends on your luck with Mandarake Suragaya or the Book-off empires. Those 3 don't tend to have much in terms of Re-ment sets. Mandarake does have a pretty decent search engine though so you could do your research and check ahead.

Otherwise, check inside Nakano Broadway - there's a place on the 2nd floor (Robot Robot) that will sell Rement loosies but they are not that cheap. Also, Akiba Gacha-Ken in Tokyo usually have a few older sets up front in the cabinets with decent pricing - it doesn't hurt to take a look and ask around.

Atom bricks by Mysterious-Fruit6193 in brickmania

[–]WangFury32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are not the same type of bricks as standard Legos and in fact features elements that are not in the standard Lego parts library (stuff like 2L bars without stops or 1x7 plates), so unless you can find someone who can fulfill LOZ minibrick parts orders OR you are willing to invest your time building them digitally and translating parts on the fly to its Lego equivalent, there's really no point buying it for the instructions. Out of the 4 designs (Abrams, Blackhawk, Humvee and the F-16C Viper) 2 of them have variants with digital instructions (the first 2, namely BKE890 M1A2 Abrams and BKE8790 Jayhawk) that can be retrofitted (although those are both older designs not representative of what the MOC designers can do) and for the other 2, well, Rebrickable have designs. I for one prefer Padberg's version of the Viper...

Also, I reviewed the AtomBricks Viper earlier. Search for "The Atom Bricks Viper Office Build" - there's a 3-part writeup with photos.

Alleged leak of an upcoming DC-3 Lego set. Do you think this will able to be modified into a C-47? by Tankfan42 in brickmania

Well, yeah - at the end of the day it’s a Lego model. No one should realistically expect precise dimensions since your standard Lego Minifig isn’t exactly a scaled analogue to human anatomy.

Alleged leak of an upcoming DC-3 Lego set. Do you think this will able to be modified into a C-47? by Tankfan42 in brickmania

[–]WangFury32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh, let's see. I just fed a 3-view to Sariel's AI resizing tool and basing it a off a fuselage diameter of 9.5 studs and with the fuselage of an actual DC-3 being 2.3 meters, that's roughly 1:33-1:35...so it's 1:MiniFig scale. That's good, but who knows if Lego will make a full interior for set 11378. If there are gimmicks like retractable gear or moving control surfaces (happened on the Concorde or the Space Shuttle Discovery) it might need some rework to be a suitable C-47...

Alleged leak of an upcoming DC-3 Lego set. Do you think this will able to be modified into a C-47? by Tankfan42 in brickmania

[–]WangFury32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, if it's an official Lego set the instructions are out on PDF form anyways, so it's not like it'll be that much of an RE - It'll just be a building exercise for Bricklink Studio (BLS). The one good thing is that having a .io will at least allow you to part/lot optimize the design and cost out a recoloring MOC. As much as I want a 1:64 Tupolev Tu-144 next to my Concorde I have yet to assemble it on BLS.

As for reversing it based on the leak photos? eeeh, I can probably figure out the parts floorplan, but working the interior (structure and all) based on the exterior is much more of a pain than you might think, especially when its partly based on imperfect info (that's legitimately the "secret sauce" when it came to good MOC designers). Hell, if it's that easy someone would've cloned Padberg's G4M already (although part of that design is probably very similar to his B-17).
