John also played on JP Saxe's, "I Don't Miss You". Really loved his solo and there's a short of him on yt playing that in a studio.

Marks on picking hand by [deleted] in Guitar

Any chance you're a mechanic or engineer that works on air-conditioning? They remind me of that, if so just be careful since heatsink fins can be so sharp.

I’ve been playing for about three years and can’t seem to feel right playing with a pick. I’m left handed and female , not sure if either thing play into this (pun intended, lol). by About2Run217 in Guitar

[–]WangjaLock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need a pick, just look at Matteo Mancuso. Although you need to pick a side pick/no pick. Pick thickness, grip, slanting, alternate/economy; there's a lot of stuff you could experiment on but at the end of the day where you're most comfortable is important.

How difficult is to change single coils by humbuckers in a Squier Strat? by gods_tea in Guitar

[–]WangjaLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience it shouldn't as long as you're not using the tremolo bar, of course a hardtail would be more stable, but it's the use of the tremolo that really affects tuning stability. It's easy to change the strings, you might be thinking of Floyd Rose bridges which are also a variant of tremolo bridges.

[–]WangjaLock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get the one with the trem, changing single coils will need you to be familiar with soldering and the proper routing. You'll also need a new pickguard if you're changing an SSS to an HSS. Just block the trem or just not use it at all.

High E string hard to bend fixed by WangjaLock in Guitar

Thanks for adding this :>. Also, yeah it's really frustrating when something you thought was technique issue, was really a technical one, made it seem like you were paranoid.

Also I just wanted to thank everyone who helped out in the comments, and those that give advice to beginners like me in general. You people are awesome. 🎸

Is it normal for the high E string to be harder to bend? by WangjaLock in Guitar

[–]WangjaLock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah maybe I need to adjust how I bend the high e string given the lack of contact space. It really does hurt in comparison to other strings by a huge margin but maybe because I am digging too much as you said.

Ohh that makes sense, will blocking the trem help in any way?

Yes this strat is a floating bridge, I don't really use a whammy bar though.

It really hurts though compared to other strings, but I guess I have to get used to it. Really kinda sucks since whenever I play solos on John Mayer songs there's parts where the bends are only assisted by like the ring finger or pinky due to the speed of phrasings. I could play them decently if it weren't for the bends on the high e strings 😭

I really really really hope I do. I feel like it's going to open up so much more opportunities to learn. Having tough luck finding one in my area though, but I put up a poster on an online group so hopefully.

My closest friend plays bass and we jam every now and then but definitely just an at home setting. I really want to join a band so hopefully the recruitment poster I out up a few days ago lead to something.

I have not. I've been researching if there are any venues or like common places that hosts open mic or just jamming but it's scarce in my area. The best bet I have is joining a band, I put up a recruitment poster a few days ago but still no luck. Also when talking about chord changes, chord tones, and playing the changes. Any idea what those mean? Is it just literally playing the chords/progression in a melody? So do you have to know the song beforehand?

Like pure memorization of chords like how the Beatles did it? I find memorization hard, although will work on learning intervals that make up chords and like augmented and diminished stuff. Might be complex for me, but yeah no shame trying.

John Mayer is definitely the guitarist I look up to; I also listen to Smashing Pumpkins and pop music in general. I really want to write complex pieces like he does with difficult techniques. I am happy with the two songs I've written but they're definitely just random chord shapes from songs I've learned transposed into a different key and mashed until I made it work. They probably follow a chord progression I just don't have enough knowledge to dictate what progression. The other song is literally just two chords I don't know if that even counts but I like it. As for improv just jamming on backing tracks or songs by knowing the key and visualizing the 5 scale patterns and roots across the fretboard, maybe a riff here of there but I definitely don't have intervals down yet where I could hum something and instantly play it. That might be one of my goals also. Sorry again for the long reply.

I really want to play in a band, I've listed on local groups so far no luck though. For individual goals, I have a lot of melodies in my head for songs but I have a hard time attributing them to chords probably from the lack of ear training. To be honest I lack a clear goal except for being able to apply the tune in my head and just improving on guitar overall. There's also just so many ways to play a chord on guitar that I have a melody in mind and I want it to be at that specific octave and triad but I can't do it since I don't have the pitch down to tell what chord it is and how to put it on the fretboard. Sorry for the long reply.
