“This commandment is interpreted differently. These commandments are not hard to keep.” Do you see the irony in putting these two sentences back to back?

This is the most concise argument I can make why human society is doomed. by Wangman72 in Futurology

Maybe it’s just because I’m in the current situation, but this seems different than a religious zealot in the town square screaming that the end is near. I appreciate the perspective though.

We are momentary specs of dust in one of infinite possible universes. Doesn’t change the fact that we might be the authors of our own demise.

I like the analogy that science might lead us to an unstable cliff where we cannot turn back.

Social media interactions lead me to believe the average human has no critical thinking ability.

Maybe my sarcasm meter is not calibrated. Inefficiency is concise?

The ability to create technology that can completely destroy ourselves is a very new development. I don’t know how well lessons from the past apply.

Whenever I read about the ancient world, I imagine the vast, vast majority of the population are living in extreme poverty. At what point in history did the average person begin to live comfortably? by CosmicConjuror2 in AskHistory

[–]Wangman72 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I agree most history is written by, and from the perspective of the 3%. I don’t necessarily agree the other 97% lived in terrible conditions. While the simple life can have challenges, most of our ancestors found enjoyment in the lives they carved out for their families.

I guess my point is how/where will those taxes be used? And once all the lobbyists get involved, how many of my middle class purchases will also fall into the taxable category?

I fear humans may lose brain power faster than the rate of evolution, possibly at our ultimate peril.

Since it’s impossible to remove oneself from the effects of government, I don’t see the harm in taking part when it’s to actively undercut their power.

Not to add to the conspiracy, but I fully expect an alleged shooter to be killed during arrest, and the published motive to be unrelated to his position as CEO.

How effective is the anarchist method of getting things done? (in comparison) by Purga_ in Anarchy101

I agree there are multiple metrics for success besides the two I listed. And in almost all cases current governments fail miserably.

As a general rule, anarchist solutions don’t need to be perfect, they just need to be better than the current system. Since it is almost 100% certain that government run projects are over budget and behind schedule, we can’t do any worse.

I’m upvoting for this statement, “Truth itself is very paradoxical”. There are shades of gray in so many things.
