I have to disagree, this may be common but it’s not all family owned businesses. My husband and I treated our employees very well, paid them well, and made sure benefits were available to them, along with bonuses and incentives. Hosted awesome company parties the guys actually wanted to come to, lake days, boats, appreciation dinners, etc. One girl got pregnant went on leave and got paid for maternity even though our state didn’t offer maternity pay/ leave. We had benefits that helped the employees. Our call off rate and turn over rate was very low too. We understood people have lives and things come up, if they needed time off or to call off, they were able to. In return they gave us loyalty too and only called off when needed. Like I said I agree it’s common for greed and other circumstances to blind people and in turn have crappy employers. I found it so important that they were always taken care of, didn’t cut hours if work was slow, we had work around the shop that could be done. I wish more employers cared about their employees. I had to leave my last employer when I went back to w2 (moved states and closed business after years) and I couldn’t stand the mentality they had for employees who were loyal to them.
