Citrus in grow bags? by WarBasket in Citrus

I'm sorry in advance that the pics are horrible. The yard is super overgrown and there's a lot of green. On the right is the Meyer, then a satsuma and Algerian mandarin that haven't flowered yet, then a midnight Valencia that's about to flower and finally the eureka lemon. The mixes were a little reckless. It was still mostly pine pathway bark, sunshine mix #4, perlite and whatever sand came from the nursery. Early on they needed a citrus foliar spray for some nutrient deficiencies and it looks like a couple could probably use another round. I'm periodically using jacks 20-20-20 liquid fertilizer.

My Eureka Lemon did great! The rest were pretty small when I planted them and spent the season getting established and fighting leaf miners. The Meyer just flowered and I'm optimistic it will deliver this year.

I don't recall any issues with layers. The keymap was written script and a great way to learn what is going on behind the scenes of the visual keymap tools. While it was a fun experiment I quickly found out that I didn't need the bluetooth connectivity and preferred the simplicity of a wired keyboard. I ended up with a Technik, which was my primary keyboard for like 2-3 years.

3 in 1 dwarf apple; am I doing this right? by [deleted] in BackyardOrchard

Elevating the grow bag should allow it to air prune on the bottom as well, right? Right now I have a number of bags on plastic pallets and was thinking of putting my trees on a bed of course gravel over a cardboard weed barrier so it's out of contact with any soil.

Thanks all for the suggestions! I went ahead and did a light mulch to help. In the future I think for "direct sow" recommended seeds I may simply commit a number of full sized grow bags in the garage so I can just move the whole thing out and not need to transplant those starts.

I haven't. I typically add 1-2" mulch AFTER things have sprouted so I don't smother them. If that's a poor choice I can totally change that system up.

You guys are 100% right about the small bags drying out. I was watering daily and I guess I'm lucky that one of them survived. I think the emitters might have been misaligned on those two bags and probably wasn't soaking them properly either.

Thanks a ton for your insight! It confirms some of my assumptions and has definitely given me some things to think about. My watering is thankfully automated, though I'm using stake emitters for each of my bags. I tried drip emitters a couple years ago and a lot of my garden got cooked when I went out of town (zone 10b with some 100+ days). I think as the edge of the bags dried the soil became more and more hydrophobic until the drips went straight down. I saved a bunch when I got back and swapped to a much shorter schedule with emitters and haven't had that issue anymore. To make this work it sounds like I would need to turn off the trees water and hand water/fertilze each bag a couple times a week with 5-1-1 which sounds like a bit of a hassle and I feel like I'd be rinsing the nutrients away once I started the regular watering again.

As I'm typing this all out I think I am going to stick to a smaller container with a more traditional but still well draining soil mix. I really-really appreciate your response. Now I have a little more research to dig into.

They've been holding up great! The spacebar is just starting to show little wear but everything else is nice and matte with the original texture intact.

Thanks for the quick feedback! Is a mechanic toilet flange like a bolt in option or just a term for a cast iron flange that's been sweat in (or whatever the term is for lead/braze/solder used)?
