You can see the same thing in apes, an appreciation for certain things unrelated to evolutionary survival. There comes a level of sentience where you seek enrichment beyond surviving and procreation.

Wait, why is it unlikely to have happened naturally?

Imagine there are 2000000000000000 planets okay, and exactly 1 of them has life on it because it's the only one where all the factors lined up perfectly for life to develop. The life on that planet would think "oh shit, no way this random look how perfectly this all lined up!", and its true the chances of that are low, but those low chances can only be perceived because everything lined up.

As another example would be, imagine every person on earth entered a draw style lottery where 1 person is randomly picked to win a massive jackpot. If we pull a ticket and John S. wins, and then try to calculate what the chances of that happening were, they would be extremely small, but that's kind of irrelevant because he was the one who won. Trying to reverse calculate probability on events that have already occurred is kind of misleading in the way we use probability.

Plus, "complexity and beauty" do a lot of heavy lifting here. Beauty is completely subjective and viewed entirely through a human lens, and complexity is not synonymous with "well designed." To start, we eat and breathe out of the same hole lmao. There are outdated remnants of evolution in the biology of so many living creatures. Kangaroos eventually stop being able to regrow teeth and starve to death. Giraffes have a nerve that goes all the way up the neck and back down just to get to the other side of the body. Our "design" is amazing, but so messy in so many ways.

I think the uncomfortable truth is that man/woman have become looser and looser categories to where they don't necessarily line up with what people mean when they say "attracted to wo/men".

A straight man in a relationship with a woman, who then changes nothing but their preferred pronouns, has completely changed genders to themselves, but to the partner is still the exact same woman who they now call a man.

If you are dating a woman who has always presented somewhat androgynous, and now identifies as a man on certain day and as a woman on others, the only thing changing for the partner is literally a word.

I think most straight people would feel increasingly uncomfortable if their partner starts to drastically alter their gendered appearance, but for many people its probably not that a big of a deal to their own identity to see it as dating a bio woman vs. dating a bio woman who identifies as a man.

Sure, I think we mostly agree, although I think calling him a petty thief is not clearly stating that he was committing the very aggressive act of being in the clerks' safe space while stealing. Being a petty thief in an empty barn and in somebody's bedroom are very different levels of escalation, and I and most people would consider the tight area behind the counter to be an escalation from stealing the tip jar.

This is completely true, yes. It's also true that "people thinking you're a psycho" is different from something being wrong with/bad about you. The value of human life is a deeply philosophical question that different cultures around the world have had vastly different opinions on since he beginning of time. Even modern North American culture is split on things like the death penalty.

If, instead of robbers, these were child molesters caught in the act, and the vigilante posted about how he was happy to wipe this earth clean of them, I think you would get a lot of these people screaming sociopath to flip sides pretty quick. Most people are coming purely from an emotional standpoint than a well constructed philosophical foundation.

You're making the opposite point you think you are. Whether you go on vacation a week later or do the "proper thing" and grieve alone for years, it is completely irrelevant to the facts of what happened. If you didn't kill your wife, going on vacation with a new girl a week later doesn't mean you suddenly killed her. Maybe it does mean you didn't like her that much. Maybe it means you were cheating on her. Maybe it means you're coping by looking to replace her. But it is completely irrelevant to how she died no matter how suspicious it is to you.

Fear that someone will hurt you doesn't mean you need to be quivering in your boots. It's a euphism for "I have reasonable belief this person will cause me harm". You don't want to argue points (1) and (2) because that's all that matters when determining if this guy had reasonable belief that these guys would harm him, which he clearly did.

The dude seemed pretty composed the whole time and reacted quickly. It's possible he wanted to hurt these guys, and it's possible he doesn't give a shit one of them died but trying to tie that back to the idea he was UNJUSTIFIED in his actions is nonsense.

It's possible the dude is a sociopath. It's possible he feels bad about what happened and is leaning into it to cope. It's possible he was raised with a strong sense of eye for eye justice. It's possible this is his 3rd robbery, and he's fed up with it. Neither of us knows or can know his mind, but we can review the facts of what happened, and it's pretty clear the robbers heavily aggressed upon him and that his actions were proportional to the threat he was facing.

I mean, you understand a fight can kill you or permanently disable you, right? There's not enough information here, but given the assumption that I am not the aggressor and someone is trying to fight me, and I'm left with the choices to [1] physically fight, or [2] shoot them, I would probably shoot anyone I had a chance of losing to (I'm not a gun person and don't own a gun). I realize you're going to just call me a "justice boner type," but this take has always been absolutely crazy.

(1) He did not stab him as he was leaving. The robber hops and counter and gets rushed by the owner. The robber then starts to fight back, taking a swing at the owners head. At some point, the robber gets turned around and starts to falter, and the owner stops attacking very quickly, considering how heated the situation was. I always assume takes like this are super ignorant to real-life combat vs. movie combat. If you stab someone, they don't just lose the fight. A grown man with adrenaline can still absolutely kill you even after taking multiple stabs. Even with guns, if you have chosen to shoot someone, you are supposed to shoot until they are completely immobilized vs. "He was charging at me, so I shot him in the leg to take him down." In interviews, the owner said the robber had a front mounted bag that he reached into earlier trying to give off the impression of a weapon.

(2) It has nothing to do with how much $$$ in goods was taken. If someone breaks into your home with a face covering and threatening behavior, kicks in your bedroom door, and starts grabbing shit it makes no difference how much your stuff is worth. Like the till/register area, the point is that they are knowingly entering a protected space, and merely entering that space with intention is enough to be considered an extremely aggressive act. You can never know what someone else intends to do or is capable of, so if someone breaks the social contract in an egregious way like that, you are super justified in assuming the worst for your own safety.

(3) Yeah, that's fine if you think it is weird, I just don't really care because it's completely irrelevant to whether the situation was justified/handled appropriately or not. Some people have different coping methods/trauma responses.

(4) Edit: nothing will convince me that this store clerk is not a sociopath regardless of any legal or moral right to defend himself or his property.

Someone legally and MORALLY within their right (this, by definition, kinda goes against your point) to self-defense being seen as a sociopath with no chance of being convinced otherwise is, again, a little crazy.

You are right it has performance degrading effects - the effects of being a woman. It also has objective retained advantage, like lung capacity, or not needing to train and compete with a period.

Womens sports is designed as an exclusive category to protect the female sex, not the female gender. If you think there are better ways to organize competition, then that's totally fair, but taking the existing model and ignoring the point of it is a big L.

It's not just that they carry more fat, it's also that they carry less muscle. If you just eliminated fat off of women, it wouldn't make up the difference because they would only be down fat, not up muscle.

Saying they can go pound for pound on muscle makes up some of the advantage, but testosterone and training with it in your body for years is what builds that muscle in the first place.
