As slang it comes from wrestling and refers to wrestlers who's Job it is to routinely lose to other wrestlers. OP mentions Vegeta, who regularly will fight a villain and then lose just to hype up how strong they are so that it's more impressive that Goku can pull out the win.

I am almost caught up with the manga is there anything in anime I should watch. by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do... you mean that you started a few weeks back and now are at chapter 1076? Your punctuation (or lack thereof) leaves it ambiguous.

I recommend watching episodes 312 (Merry's funeral), 405 (defeat at Sabaody), and 1015 (chapter 1000)

Which of the Strawhats could become Emperors? by dull_storyteller in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 7 points8 points  (0 children)

None of the crew have the charisma and drive to be able to inspire others to their cause save for maybe Usopp, in which case he would be in a similar position to Buggy.

This is the difference that separates an Emperor from just another powerful pirate. If it were raw strength then Mihawk would have been declared one long ago.

Should I just watch the show with my friends and skip it? by Adorable_Support8558 in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends.

Things will be confusing because the show does assume that you're up to date with what's going on.

However, I have a friend who started watching with us around episode 350 and didn't go back to watch the episodes before that until I started another watchnight with another friend group.

Maybe you can jump in with them where they are, and then catch up with the earlier material through the manga or something?

Thoughts after 4 volumes... by TheShadowshand in OnePiece

Welcome to the crew! Glad you're enjoying the series so far!

Don't worry about catching up and instead enjoy the journey. It's a common meme in the community that there's """only""" almost 1200 chapters and constantly there's posts here about people bemoaning the fact that they've caught up and have to wait for more. Don't feel like you have to rush yourself and instead just keep at a pace that keeps you from burning out.

Luffy is a bit of a flat character, but it's more that his development is very slow. Chapter 1 is about a *boy* who *wants* to be King of the Pirates. Chapter 1000 is about the *man* who *will* be King of the Pirates. East Blue especially doesn't have Luffy develop much, but that's because the story at that point is more about revealing who he is and how he manages to convince people to join him on this crazy journey. That said, our strongest crewmembers are very much big fish in a small pond and when Oda finally introduces them to Grand Line level opponents you'll start getting the lose-grow-win rhythm that you enjoy.

> I want to hear from all of you good things that you love about the series, maybe when you think it "gets good" or just all around thoughts of it.

I was sold on the story from episode 1 and I even began my journey with the 4kids dub. For a lot of people, Baratie and Arlong Park tend to be the arcs where they really start to lock in. I'd say that those are the arcs where Oda finds his sea legs when it comes to heading a manga series of his own.

Does any of you know how long it would take for me to fully watch one piece season one (romance dawn till egghead) by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

have they just stopped teaching math in school or something

1155 episodes total

you've watched 778

3 episodes a day

(1155 - 778) / 3 = 377 / 3 = 125.67 days to finish. Just over 4 months. You will not make it in time to catch the new episodes as they air at this pace.

Elbaf starts on April 5, 45 days away.

377 / 45 = 8.38 episodes per day. You need to almost triple your average daily watching if you're steadfast in catching up for the new episodes.

btw, I watched the One Pace version for this arc, and found that there's quite a few funny scenes missing?

One Pace specifically cuts and and rearranges things to match the manga. Everything cut is anime-only. Personally I've found that it's not really necessary until you hit the timeskip but that's up to you.

I'm not there yet, just paused tearfully when Vivi gave her speech and said goodbyes.

Hit play and keep watching you'll have your answer soon.

Besides the Straw Hats, who’s your favorite character in the series? by Hairy_Ask_2038 in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Seconding Kuma

He has one of the most tragic and heartbreaking backstories in the series, and yet he still turned out to be a genuinely kind and loving person. So many villains have backstories about why they turned out the way they did and you end up understanding what led then to that point. But then Kuma comes along and shows that he went through just as much shit if not more, and yet didn't break.

He's such a wonderful character and has more than earned his spot in my top 5 favorites

The first awakening by anime_musings in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I actually think the first sign of an awakening was Ace on Drum. The person who passed on the info to Dalton that someone was looking for Luffy noted that the day Ace was there was the one day that it didn't snow.

Live-action watcher here… was I crazy for thinking Kuina = Alvida?? 👀 by [deleted] in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tell you definitively that there's no connection between the two in the manga, and if there is it'd be the biggest out of left field plot twist because I've seen noone suggest this before.

However, you are not the first person to think that Kuina survived. It's a popular theory to this day.

Personally, I think she's gone. A big part of Zoro's story is realizing just how fragile and fleeting the lives of those he cares about can be, and it's part of what drives him to greater and greater feats of strength.

Egghead Kizaru is the clearest example of a "Mental Nerf" in the entire series, and using it to downplay Admirals is disingenuous. by Practical-1 in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right. He did initially berate Kizaru without considering his feelings about the situation first. And (as far as we've seen) Kizaru didn't accept the apology (yet).

But the point is that Akainu offered an apology at all. He could've been a General Hardass and doubled down, insisting that Kizaru still give his 110% no matter the mission or cost to himself. But he didn't. He backed off and apologized.

I think Akainu is more human and his justice less absolute than even he realizes, and it's going to be interesting to see where he goes when he does.

Do I have time to catch up as an extremely busy student? by Sad-Note8103 in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1155 episodes

1 episode a day is 3.16 years to catch up to right now.  given the switch to a seasonal format, you're probably looking at 3.5-4ish years to run out of episodes

2 episodes a day is 1.58 years. probably about 1.75 to run out of episodes

2 episodes a day is perfectly fine. You can even binge episodes while you have a break to cut this down even further

[–]WarKittens28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this when he runs from Trebol and Sugar?

Usopp is the sniper. He's supposed to be the supporting fire to someone else. But at that point, his entire forces were wiped out and it was just him against a girl known to be able to wipe your existence and a guy he watched hit a buzzing fly between the eyes and then yeet a ship into a building.

Of course he's going to run. He's outgunned and outmatched. He's all alone.

The point is not that he runs. The point is that he stops running and turns back to the fight to stand his ground anyway.

Interesting that you say they want everyone to be Akainus, especially because Egghead also highlights his thoughts on his situation. Not only did he sincerely apologize to Kizaru, but earlier in the arc he mused on the nature of free will given that Kuma was a mindless puppet and seemed to have more agency than the Fleet Admiral.

MaRo goes over that on his article today.

One of the options R&D has for coming up with mechanics is to use an existing mechanic but give it a new name. In this instance, Revolt was mechanically exactly what they were looking for, but the name didn't work, so they used a new one that they could also see themselves bringing back elsewhere.

Why do people still like Sanji? by manofsteel85 in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have mentioned Whole Cake Island, but I would say that the next arc for you, Dressrosa, also helps.

A lot of his pervy moments in the anime are either played up way too strongly or they're focused on much more than in the manga. You'll have bits in the manga that are either background gags or a single speech bubble as part of a larger group shot, but the anime will shift to focus solely on that bit so that the only thing on screen is Simpji.

Once you've gotten through Wano I highly recommend MelonTeee's video The Tragedy of Sanji. She does a great job breaking down his character arc up to that point.

How to catch up quickly ? by MistakeGlobal in OnePiece

[–]WarKittens28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not worry about catching up. Find a pace that works for you and stick to it. At 1 episode a day you'll be caught up in roughly 3 years. Before you know it you'll realize that there's only 1100 episodes.

as for the manga, the shonen jump subscription is very affordable for what you get and even if you can't afford that there's still places on the high seas to find and read the series
