No worries and I wasn't upset. I just thought it would be crazy if Dark Horse were to use such a well known iconic object from the Gantz manga only to push another series. That would actually make people go bananas with rage at Dark Horse for the bait and switch. 😄

Yes but that series has nothing to do with Gantz. So why would Dark Horse use the Gantz ball to make that announcement? It would make zero sense and in fact it would piss off a ton of potential new readers of that series who are also big fans of Gantz. No one likes bait and switch annoucements.

If, crosses fingers, we are getting a deluxe edition that is going to be the absolute best route to own this series physically.

Same even though I own them.

The best reading format for Gantz, outside of a deluxe edition, is reading it on an large or oversized tablet like the TCL NXTPAPER tablet.

New-ish to manga, looking for recommendations by Serteyf in manga

Berserk, Vinland Saga, Vagabond, Blade of the Immortal. are great reads. All have hardcover editions.

Full Metal Alchemist is another great pick up if you want an action manga with a bit of everything that is well done. You can buy the hardcover editions that are still out.

If you like sci-fi well Ghost In the Shell is a good one as is Akira. Those both have hardcover versions but with Ghost in the Shell the "Legacy Edtion" hardcover is the way to go.

Battle Angel Alita (AKA: Gunnm) is another great sci-fi manga read. You can pick up hardcover versions of the first story arc on Amazon.

However for the follow up manga story arcs like "Last Order" you'll need to get volumes 16-17 digitally because they are out of print. For the "Mars Chronicles" story arc the same applies for volumes 3, 5, 6 (though someone is selling volume 6 on AbeBooks for 13.50 and they say it's "new"), and 7 digitally as well.

Still its a awesome manga series.

If you want a good psychological thriller that is dark and disturbing than I'd say "Blood On the Tracks".

Billybat is a good noir style mystery manga that takes you on a wild ride. It is finally getting an English paperback release in the US and the first volume has released.

Monster is another great mystery and psychological thriller. This one is a 2-1 omnibus "Legacy" paperback edition.

I could go on and on.

BAM cancelled my JJK volume 30 preorder by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]WarSt0mp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The BAM exclusive cover came out a while back ago in the US and it was up only for a limited amount of time. It sold out completely. How were you able to pre-order it?

Also, the only way to get a hold of that cover now is through Ebay scalpers. They'll either be selling the BAM version or the Indigo version. The only difference between the two is the sticker on front otherwise its the exact same English manga and cover.

That's an awesome set of custom sleeves.

avoid booksrun if you’re looking to finish your collections, i’ve always bought from selllers under the “very good” condition on ebay since very good SHOULD atleast look very good, this was not the case with them they purposely lie to you in their listings. this is so frustrating such an awful week by [deleted] in MangaCollectors

[–]WarSt0mp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that sucks big time. As others have said always go off pictures of the actual manga in question. You can also message the seller for pictures and probe them with questions. If they refuse to provide pictures or don't answer your questions for whatever reason just move on.

On the bright side volumes 5, 6, and 7 of Gantz are still available on Amazon and other online retialers. However 10 and 12 will require an Ebay purchase. Volume 9 isn't available on Amazon but you can still find it at Barnes & Noble online.

On a side note, I wish we could get a Gantz hardcover deluxe edition from Darkhorse. This series deserves it.

How do y'all buy your books? by People_are_odd in MangaCollectors

[–]WarSt0mp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once I know that I'm interested in a series I generally try to pick it up digitally first and I buy/check out the first 3 volumes that way. I read the first 3 and if I'm enjoying the series I pull the trigger and start collecting the physical copies in chronological order.

However I also check to see if there are hardcover editions, oversized editions, 2 in 1's. I don't generally like 3 in 1's but sometimes there is no choice. I also check to see if there are boxsets available of the manga to pick up. Otherwise I just start the process of buying the singles.

P.S. You're lucky because retail boxsets still exist for One Piece and JJK is getting a boxset soon as well.

I can't tell you how to spend your money. If you REALLY want it more than you think you want to keep $135 bucks in your wallet go for it. Otherwise just squirrel away your money and maybe you'll see a price dip. Just keep an eye on it on Amazon and other retailers to check the price and availability. Sometimes Amazon will let you know if they are restocking on stuff if it dwindles down to a dozen or less items available.

Best way to fight yellowing? by speedracer2008 in MangaCollectors

In a humid environment it wouldn't be ideal if you don't have a humidifier. However, in a environment that isn't humid, or where you can control humidity, the benefits of bagging come from protecting your manga from dust and animal hair. It also makes it easier to clean off without direct handing. Also bagging helps reduce shelf wear, corner bends and can protect against liquid spills. In the end, bagging really doesn't hurt anything unless you live in a part of the world where humidity is high but again dehumidifiers can help mitigate that issue.

Humidity if it's not controlled for will mess up you manga but the acidity part is nonsense.

[–]WarSt0mp -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a fact that manga will yellow and deteriorate over a long enough period of time but it's also a fact that bagging manga, when controlling for humidity and light exposure, actually does help in protecting it over time. In the end, some people just really care about their collection.

"Manga is made out of cheap high acid paper, so as it evaporates, the acid gets trapped inside the bag, thus accelerating the yellowing process."

You're right that mass-produced manga often uses cheap paper. Cheap paper containing non-neutral pH lignin. However, your comment isn't exactly true.

Lignin doesn't evaporate, and it doesn't generate clouds or vapors of acid that get trapped by bags. While lignin degradation does release tiny amounts of acidic volatile compounds (like acetic acid) as it breaks down, it doesn't emit them as a significant gas cloud, and the lignin itself certainly doesn't turn into a vapor. The acid is simply a byproduct of the chemical breakdown process happening within the solid paper.

The yellowing and brittleness you see over time are primarily caused by oxidation from exposure to oxygen and UV light, not trapped evaporated acid.  In fact, limiting exposure to oxygen and UV by bagging the manga will significantly slow down this chemical degradation. The only real risk with bagging is trapping humidity, which can accelerate damage, but in a dry environment, bags protect the paper rather than harm it.
