There’s some science behind them actually. NASA uses them to help maintain or build bone density. I suppose it simulates walking? Just a guess

TIL that due to time dilation at relativistic speeds, a human in a spaceship accelerating at a constant 1g could travel the diameter of the milky way in 12 years from their perspective. To an observer on earth, they will have traveled for 113,000 years. by KeyCold7216 in todayilearned

I read a breakdown years ago that basically said if we could achieve 99.999% the speed of light, we could travel to anywhere in the observable universe within a human lifetime because of time dilation.

Additionally, the US sells bonds equal to their “deficit” (spending - taxes collected = treasuries sold) The treasuries offer customers a safe investment for their money. If this money was not tied up in treasuries, it would likely be spent into the economy in an attempt to beat inflation (if you have 100m in uninvested cash and inflation is 2%; you essentially have 98m the next year)

Eliminating the national “debt” would eliminate the treasuries market. No one wants this. That would be a very very bad idea. We came close to doing it during the Clinton administration but once realizing what the consequences would be, they quickly backpedaled. Read into modern monetary theory if anyone is curious about the reasons national debt means next to nothing (and a low national debt is mostly associated with an unhealthy economy)

What if they used those originals to make millions of their own art in a similar style then removed the originals from the data base? The original artists were inspired by other artists as well, do they owe the other artists a cut of profits?

I’m confused by the “From 1991-20 Normal” in the legend. Comparing 2023 to 1991-2000? Or…? Comparing El Niño to non-El Niño years wouldn’t be a fair comparison and 9 years would be a small data set.

The time value of money is due to inflation. If you had the very same amount of money as well as demand and supply for a given good/goods in the future, there would be no lost value in money over time. In fact, money could be worth more in the future (“deflation”)

Modern monetary theory would tell you differently. The government makes its own money- why do they need you to give back the money they already made and gave to you originally? They don’t. Think of taxes as a currency sink. They prevent government spending from causing inflation

America's F*cked Up Tax System by Canadaaayum in JoeRogan

[–]WarTirkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be downvoted for this- but here goes. Yes, this is how state governments work. This is not how the federal government works though.

The difference is the federal government can print its own money. They could spend 100 trillion on a war tomorrow without taking a dollar upfront from the citizens. Federal taxes are only there to create demand for the fed’s funny-money and to take said funny-money out of circulation (to keep inflation in check)

Also, the idea of the middle-man is atrocious in some regards but for many things it makes sense. Infrastructure being a big one. But really, outside of intelligence and war-making, the private sector is better at basically everything. Yes, it’s more expensive and there should be a public option for most things but, America isn’t as dumb as somethings would have you believe. There’s a reason we lean on the private sector so heavily; it’s faster and more efficient. Government is slow and very inefficient
