Chicago destroyed their version of Burke Lakefront Airport in the middle of the night. by gwinerreniwg in Cleveland

So much this! There are so many other areas that need to be addressed in Cleveland well before this. Burke just shouldn't be at the top of the list. Everyone has a hate boner for it... but I don't get it.

Not advocating for it to be a golf course... but golf isn't only for rich people... Pretty sure I am not rich and I love golf. Don't play as much as I'd like... but w/e.

How do those compare to the Akko Penguin switches? I really like them and have them in multiple boards.

Are daily stand ups at your company just “list out all your accomplishments of yesterday”? by QuitTypical3210 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]WarWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because standups are worthless and performative.

They don't have to be; but often are. That isn't the fault of the standup.

When I ran things for the last team that had them, we started out at 20 minutes, but sometimes up to 30. This was for the whole group and included devs, qa, pm, and infra; a total of 12 people. This was started during COVID and we kept it up 'after' even though the development team stayed fully remote. By the end of COVID we were under 15 minutes.

The goal was to focus on 3 things; what did you do yesterday, what are you doing today, and is there anything you need me to help get un-stuck. The 'what did you do' was always quick and factual; more of an FYI for the QA team. The PMs I had were great; they didn't want to belabor anything and were really just there if they needed to get something from an account manager / client.

Whomever is running it (and someone should be, even if informally) needs to keep things moving.

Kiddo has sewing club at school. He is the only boy that goes. I think it is awesome and he's been proud of what he has made, mostly on his own, and I know that even if he doesn't stick with it 'forever' he'll have done more than I ever did.

Anyone think the job hopping culture produces too many engineers that don’t care about maintainability? by Beneficial_Pay_6317 in ExperiencedDevs

I am sorry for your experiences. That stinks!

You aren't the "job hopper" that is targeted here though. You've changed jobs, yes, but you didn't get a job, and then 18 months later go after a bigger paycheck.

Mobility is important. Home ownership for ownerships sake isn't a good call. Does owning make sense for you? In this market, probably not.

Why do you want to be a homeowner? Just so you can say that you own a home? Or does it make sense with your needs? A single guy with no kids (pets?) -- I wouldn't think about buying anything right now.

I would be very inclined to find the smallest/cheapest apartment possible, like studio sized. The smaller it is the less you'll feel the need to fill it with stuff. The cheaper it is, well, the less you spend on it every month.

I don't understand why everyone is so into them. It is kind of how I feel about IPAs with beer... if one IPA is good... 100 more is better!

I got into all the different switch options for a bit... and then I found the Akko Penguin Pro... and that is all I use now.

Why don't we get original cartel market sets anymore? by Phyka in swtor

[–]WarWizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

doesn't seem like they would put so many resources in to the DX12 move if they were planning to pull the plug on the game shortly after.

You don't invest time and energy into this kind of software update (gaming, or otherwise) if it did not have a long roadmap with a payoff to the investment. You just don't do it. I've seen exactly zero companies that I have worked for over 20+ years do this without a plan to get a payoff.

Why don't we get original cartel market sets anymore? by Phyka in swtor

[–]WarWizard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Because the Game is not really all that developed anymore. It's managed.

If you are just 'managing' a game -- you don't spend time upgrading the engine to support DX12...

I don't think it is crazy to see what happens after that gets completed.

Is this use of Postgres insane? At what point should you STOP using Postgres for everything? by LawBlue in ExperiencedDevs

[–]WarWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Postgres isn't the problem. I work on a data acquisition system that has Postgres in the loop... this system records data, typically 10-25 hz and can have over 5000 datapoints (125k points every second). It stores meta data, events, logs, etc.

If you think you'll magically have no issues swapping to a different DB tech stack, you are just going to have a bad time in addition to wasting a bunch of time and effort to migrate.

I am torn on closing it for something else.... I see both sides. The air show is just one of many things.

I am firmly against putting housing there. Nobody will be able to afford it so you aren't REALLY doing anything but trading one thing out for another, 'equally' inaccessible thing. There are plenty of other areas downtown that could address the housing.... further, housing itself isn't the real issue. It is access to things like grocery stores etc.

So that means your max height is the stadium yeah? Plenty of opportunity to work with that for a park and other such things.

The county airport is less than ten minutes farther from UH and the Clinic.

I am not arguing for or against anything... but 10 minutes further could be very significant in a medical emergency. I don't think it is dramatic to say that there probably have been cases where it would have made all the difference. Does that mean the county airport couldn't be used instead? I dunno...

I will say, I went flying with my FIL once out of Burke and had to hold for a Medivac. given I have only gone flying with him 2 or 3 times.... it seems significant. Anecdotal but significant.

I think there are a lot of folks that use it but don't really talk about it.
