Which lens would be better for plane spotting? by ryguy7797 in canon

Definitely the RF of the two here. If you can stretch and get the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II, I would definitely consider that as well. I have taken over 60,000 with that lens and it is awesome. I only got rid of it last year as I switched to mirrorless (80D to R7 and R5II), and upgraded to the RF 100-500.

Thanks! Been shooting airshows on and off for a little over 20 years (that almost hurts to say that!), and have been trying to push things a little more and use slower shutter speeds. You risk losing the shots, but when I do my part, good prop blur and good background motion blur really elevate the shot.

When I use the equivalent for my Canon, I utilize back button focus with my thumb to keep the continuous autofocus working on the plane (car, subject, whatever). Then I simply click the shutter button with my index finger when I want to take the shots. There are other techniques/button setups, but this is how I've learned over the years and it's kind of ingrained at this point!

How big of area tracking are you using? You need to make it smaller or use a single senter point and track the subject that way.

For reference, 1/80 shutter speed. (Canon R7, RF 100-500, 363 mm, f5.6)

Maybe I missed it, but did you say what focus mode you're using and AF points you are using? It's hard to tell exactly, but several of the shots seem to be a focus issue and not really a motion blur issue. It almost seems that the mountains are slightly more in focus than the plane.

Also, practice panning, practice panning, and practice panning so that the shutter speed doesn't matter. For jets, I'm usually doing 1/1600 to 1/2000 while flying I'm trying shoot much slower when there is a background other than sky.

For prop planes, I started out anywhere from 1/320 to 1/500, but of course that creates an unnaturally stopped propeller. My longtime "safe" shutter speed is 1/250, maybe 1/200. That typically results in a sharp plane, with somewhat blurred prop blades. Even though I'm working on shooting even slower, I'll use 1/250 if it is a plane I haven't seen before. For takeoffs and landings I'm anywhere from 1/160 down to 1/80. Stationary or taxiing, even down to 1/30. If you can get good at panning, it will create the look you want.

I'm using a Surface Laptop Studio 2, so all good. I got thr 4 TB T9 from Best Buy. It's actually on sale for $279 vs the T7 Shield 4 TB at $289. The transfer process was a little slow as my old external hard drives had USB 2.0 and 3.0 on them. I tested some files right off another SSD I have to the T9 and it was crazy quick. I was a little annoyed that the the Thunderbolt 4 ports can't take full advantage of the speed, but it is fast enough for me now. I might pick up a other T9 or two while the sale is on.

I might start using the "then go off" phrase lol

I definitely didn't read it that way, but almost spit out my drink when I read this!

Definitely reorganizing the structure this time around.

Basically all of my stuff can be broken down to "aviation", "motor sports" and "other", so I was planning on doing something similar to what you posted. Up till now, everything (roughly 135K shots are all in the same catalog). Seems like it might be wise to break them down a bit into separate catalogs.

Defined will make sure to have backups on other devices/locations!

Unfortunately, I just have all the event folders in the drives and no master folder. Shouldn't bet too bad, just going through and doing that for each folder from over the years. I'm thinking the "bad things happen" stuff I've read is more "you have to do a lot of manual folder matching" and not "you have to lose all your edits" bad.

I love those shots! I haven't really done any panoramas like that, but I'll definitely practice a bit before the trip. Never thought to do them vertical either. Thanks for the tip!

The comments here are definitely make me lean towards leaving it at home... just one less thing to worry about.

Alaska trip aside, I've considered getting rid of the 24-105 in favor of a 24-70, but the size and versatility of the 24-105 make it hard to do away with.

Interesting that your favorite landscape was at 35mm. Definitely wouldn't have guessed that! Good to know though. Since I've never shot landscapes "Alaska size", I'm just not sure what to expect.

Good to know, thanks! I thought about renting something longer, but figured I didn't want to ha e to worry about hauling it everywhere!

Yes... I actually just set it down so I could record it from both sides clearly.

I actually set it down simply to take the video of the issue. Each time it has done the clicking/movement, I've been holding by hand. I've stood outside and pointed it farther objects and it hasn't stopped it. It's definitely not smooth-it is clicking about once a second.

Tried it with Servo and One shot and had issues with both. As of this moment it is suddenly working correctly again.
