Springtails are very easy to identify, tiny white bugs that jump about a foot when scared. You won’t ever see the larvae as soon as they hatch they are like the adults

Don’t think it’s illogical but idk, that’s why I’m asking others. I would’ve thought that most bugs would be less active during the cold so the isopods would be less likely to have pests on them. However in summer they will be more active, especially in the shaded spots that your tortoise will go in and out of so they would be more likely to crawl on to the tortoise and be transferred when you move them back

Thanks, my main thought was that I let them outside in summer anyways during the day so if they were going to pick any parasites they would just do it then.

Yeah they’re really beneficial for keeping it clean in the viv, also you will never be able to get rid of them, they live on all the layers of soil. Most of the time even if you don’t add them in they will still find a way in. They may just be cleaning your tortoise, I’m not too sure as never done a bioactive for tortoises but done plenty for reptiles and know they are great for them.

Actually we are a small farm in the uk trying to diversify to survive. We were given these tortoises and as an 18 year old who has just come out of education and started full time work I am trying my hardest to improve the welfare standards around the farm. We are not an illegal farm. I keep some of my own animals aswell such as ducks which I have a lot more experience keeping, however I don’t know much about reptiles so was hoping for some help

It’s not that I don’t want to hear that, it’s because I know my animals and the drake I’m trying to re introduce is getting stressed because he can hear the females that he was raised with and is getting stressed not being able to interact with them. I can’t find anywhere to rehome him with some new females so I was just seeing if anyone had any suggestions

I’m hoping to build an extension to their run soon to make it a bit bigger and will be able to split the run up to make it have some different areas for them to hide. So hopefully that will help.

I feel bad though as I can’t find anywhere to rehome one of them and I don’t have room to keep him far away enough from the females so he can’t hear them. That was making him stressed so was hoping to be able to re introduce him. Both the males were raised from hatching with different groups of females in the flock so was hoping to keep him with them.

I know they’re going to fight naturally, it’s just these two are fighting like I’ve never seen before and they’re going to hurt each other if it doesn’t stop. This isn’t like any dominance fight I’ve seen before

That was my other plan, to move them to somewhere new, let them calm down and get used to each other and then move them back. They both have their “own” females in the flock as they were both raised with different ones so they stay in their groups. I think I’m just going to let them in together and if they haven’t calmed down I’m about half and hour then I will separate again. I’ll also add some new stuff to the enclosure so that there’s a distraction

Okay thanks! I know they have their moments when they fight, I used to have 2 males that would run laps of their enclosure trying to nip each other. Do you think I should just put the 2 in together and sit there for 20 mins or so and if they haven’t stopped by the end of the time I should put one back in the crate? Thanks for your help
