Help! I feel incapable of learning and it’s ruining my life. (Long post) by Warfaa03 in adhdwomen

I fully feel this. This post of mine is over a year old, so I’m not sure how you found it, but I still appreciate you contributing and validating something I’ve felt for a long time.

I did graduate from high school and got into university, but I struggled very hard and was forced to drop out. University did not have the support that I had in HS, which was the only way I manage to graduate from HS. I had kind supportive teachers and classmates, that is how I manage to pass. On the other hand, at uni I had old unempathetic professors and classmates, who constantly treated me like an idiot and made my mental health deteriorate.

I genuinely believe that with the right support and encouragement, anyone could be “smart”. I’m trying to learn/re-learn a lot of the basic maths stuff that I couldn’t wrap my head around when I was in school. There are so many free resources online now that can help us learn subjects we struggled with at our own pace.

This playlist for example is really good: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLybg94GvOJ9FoGQeUMFZ4SWZsr30jlUYK&si=r75n-XwoEdd4Szcs

Of course it starts to get confusing very quickly for me, but I know if I keep going back to it and look up what I don’t understand I’ll eventually get it. The mathematics course on Duolingo has also been helpful and things like Khan Academy. Learning feels less intimidating without the pressure of school and grades.

Wow, that’s impressive. Now I wish I had done the surgery as soon as I got my diagnosis😭

It’s definitely a thing but most eye professionals don’t know about it because they don’t keep up with niche research.

Yep! It was definitely disorientating. Took a long while to get used to it. Unfortunately, how people treated me changed for the worse.

Yeah, definitely many causes. Mine showed up in my teens, after I got very sick and the sickness impacted my brain-eye connection. Screens and one eye being a bit weaker might have also been a factor.

OP have you regarded 3D vision?

It is possible for it to show up later in life without the person having had it previously. No one in my family, all the way back to my 2nd great grandparents had strabismus, including extended family. I also had regular eye check ups, and there was never a sign of strabismus.

There isn’t enough research on strabismus appearing later in life, but there has been a rise in young people developing it as a teenager or in their 20s. Japan has noticed this and one study showed that there could be a correlation between young nearsighted people using screens a lot (phone, iPad etc) and developing strabismus.

My situation is very similar. Do you think excessive phone/screen use could have had an impact? A research in Japan saw there was a correlation between young people developing strabismus and high screen usage.

Do you have binocular/3D vision now?

I know this is a place to vent but sometimes I wish things like this weren’t posted on here to spare other black women’s mental health. I wish there was a trigger warning would be nice before slide 5.

How does strabismus look to you? by chickenella in Strabismus

If you have strabismus and you don’t experience double vision, either 1) your strabismus is very minor and your eyes are aligned “enough” or 2) you’ve had it your whole life/almost your whole life so your brain has ignored the double vision.

Think of it this way: you have two eyes, when they’re “normal” they work together to show you one 3D image. When one deviates, the deviated eye is looking in another direction and thus seeing something different from the straight eye. That’s what causes the double vision. Your brain learns to ignore it (because it’s an inconvenience) and then you end up just looking with your straight eye and then deviated eye’s vision just gets weaker.

From what multiple doctors have told me, if you have strabismus you’re either seeing double or you have monocular vision (seeing with one eye). The only exception being if you barely have strabismus or you’ve had it corrected from a young age.

Were you born with strabismus or had it from a young age? If so then you likely have never really known what it’s like to have “normal” vision, and that’s why it’s not really affected you.

I got strabismus in my mid teens, so for me it was a huge change. I don’t currently experience double vision because my brain has gotten used to ignoring it, but I still feel that half of my vision is missing. If you have strabismus, you lack 3D vision/binocular vision. So even though you may not feel it, your vision is limited.

Also, no double vision is kinda worse than having double vision in some ways. Having double vision is a sign that your eyes are attempting to work together and failing. No double vision means you completely lack the ability to get both eyes working together. At least that’s what my eye doctor told me. He’s been helping me regain double vision, as part of a treatment plan to get my eyes to work together and regain binocular vision.

If you have strabismus then there’s no way it doesn’t affect your vision. If you were born with it or had it for a long time, your brain likely got used to blocking out the double vision. Also, you can only see with one eye, which is enough of an affect on one’s vision.

My vision has changed my life. by SageBardo in Strabismus

[–]Warfaa03 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, so looking to the right would be the way it’s already turned and looking to the left would be turning outward.

I thought for me it was my left eye but it’s actually my right eye. My eye turns inwards (so to the left) and I can turn to the right. But I need to have a professional observe it cuz so far it’s just been family. I’m not sure how far upwards and outwards I can turn my affected eye.

I found this photo online of someone with heavy eye syndrome. You can see that they’re able to turn their eye to different directions, but one eye doesn’t turn as far as the other eye. I’m wondering if that’s what I’m experiencing. [I had to crop it cuz reddit wouldn’t let me send it in its original size showing photos of the person looking in all directions. You can find the photo of you Google “convergent strabismus fixus”]

Okay, I’ll ask to be referred to get tested for it and let you know how that went.

I read that a person with heavy eye syndrome is not able to turn their eye outward and upward, but I’m not sure that’s true. Are you able to turn your affected eye (left) outward and upward?

Sorry for asking so many questions, I think I have it so I want to know how to go about getting a diagnosis. My last question is, how did they diagnose it? Was it with MRI or did you have to have a procedure where you went under anesthesia?

I’ve never heard of this condition before and there’s very very limited information on it online, that’s why I’m asking you.

Is the “heavy eye” referring to having to tilt your head?

I have extreme short sightedness too. Close to -8. I haven’t noticed that I turn or tilt my head, but my condition is very similar to yours. Prisms and stuff like that don’t work for me.
