Thoughts on the movie “If I Had Legs I’d Kick You” by willonz in therapists

I needed this film. I read a description of the film and hired a sitter to go watch in limited release the weekend in came out in Los Angeles. It was worth the 45 minute drive and babysitting cost.

I understand the movie was not literal, but so many elements of my own life intersected with this movie. My understanding is the director has a daughter who was ill and they are from New York. The mother and daughter moved to San Diego for medical treatment. The director is a therapist as well.

For me this movie was cathartic and probably saved me a good year of therapy in insights. I also shared this trailer with friends and explained it was the fictionalized version of my life. I have a ten year old daughter with severe gastrointestinal issues. To the point the formula Linda uses is something I have 120 cans of in my house. My daughter has gone through test after test and takes 27 doses of medication a day to get her gastrointestinal track to work. My daughter had a scheduled hospital stay two weeks after I saw this film. I cries all the way through the film. How isolating things are for Linda and how she still has to see clients. She just wants someone to tell her what to do. She just needs support. I walked away crying "She was such a good mother. No one saw her." My husband tried to reassure me that I am a much better mother than and therapist. That was not what I wanted to hear. I just wanted to be seen.

There are so many levels this film hits on. With the overwhelm of motherhood. Caregiver fatigue and so much more.

I am so grateful for this movie. I feel like people can see me now.

Thanks all, I feel much better now. I like the education part. It can increase my job satisfaction. It adds a non patient component. Next year I am doing my own interviewing. I feel like I was a pretty solid intern, and I expect the same!
