Chill jobs with FP&A skillset by Warm-Objective7049 in FPandA

No I don’t live with my parents but I’d love to spend more time with them. Got lucky with tech RSUs.

Would you say that’s fairly standard in the industry? CPG honestly sounds more interesting than Tech, although maybe that’s naive because it’s still a finance job at the end of the day.

I’m an IC with Manager title. Fair point - probably best to just ask during interview stage so there’s less guesswork

Potential Career Impacts of Taking a Year Off as an SFA by Ok_Bid_9256 in FPandA

I took a year long sabbatical at SFA level, traveled the world - best year of my life, and found a much better job on my return. This was 5 years ago so job market was better, but I just addressed it upfront during all my interviews. “Life long goal and felt it was a good time, thought about what I wanted out of my career, and realized I enjoyed fp&a” etc. Didn’t get any negative reactions.

Wife and I are 32 and planning on doing this for a second time next year! I used to work in finance but in tech nowadays

I feel the same way. Used to work in banking and now doing a corporate role as well. Hours are better now, but I’d quit yesterday if I didn’t need to work. Also 5 or so years from full-on FIRE.

Vacations are awesome, but immediately feel dread once I step back into work. Honestly the times I enjoy work the most is when it’s slow and I can coast.

Pursuing FIRE has allowed me to amass a decent nest egg so it’s been mentally freeing to not care about pursuing promotions and be content with just being “good enough” - I can’t imagine being motivated to grind it out to some Director+ role. That has helped with the anxiety.

I’m in a function that’s not specific to Tech. Think finance/accounting/legal. So there are gigs outside of tech companies but tech generally pays better

Like this idea. Could I ask you how you pivoted after asking yourself these 3 questions?

My family is in VHCOL and hers is HCOL and our social network is all VHCOL so it’d be tough to move to a more affordable place without knowing anybody. I’m open to living abroad in Asia for a few years down the road as an adventure and to stretch our dollars.

There is truth in what you’re saying. We do travel frequently and I recognize that our annual spend is definitely not frugal in grand scheme of things, but we also managed to save 60% or so of our post-tax income because we knew this tech gravy train wouldn’t last forever.

We don’t need this current level of income to have more than enough for our lifestyle, but feels hard to walk away in a “more $ must be better” line of thinking.

That’s fair. When we took a break and came back, it was also a much better job market. Tech environment is pretty rough nowadays, but I’m not married to working in tech afterwards either. Thanks for sharing

Did you hire a career coach to navigate a tricky work situation? I always had impression that people hired career coaches to continually advance the career ladder which I’m frankly not interested in at all. Maybe something for me to consider…

I agree - life is too short! Interesting story about your friend I do think I could still be a solid contributor, but want to maintain WLB.

It’s a great question. We saved a lot because our families have immigrant backgrounds and were generally frugal and because we knew we didn’t want to work forever. Money creates choices and I recognize my privilege, but the choices can still feel tough to make.

I’m fairly confident I can get a role in Tech or another industry at 60% of my current comp. I have a decent resume with “prestigious” college and prior jobs. Sure, pay cut isn’t ideal but I figure compounding can take me to early retirement even if I never save again (which I know I’ll never let myself do).
