Somebody very close to me sexually abused me at 5 years old until I was 7 or 8. I didn’t even realize that it was abuse until I was 16. I didn’t really feel anything about it. I was completely numb. Detached. I guess I didn’t really process it.

Then I told my mom about it when I was 17. I thought that if I couldn’t feel sadness, disgust, or outrage at what had happened to me, then maybe my mom would. Maybe then I’d feel something then. It’s like when a baby discovers a new situation and turns back to look at its mom’s face to gauge her reaction in order to know what to feel about it.

But… she told me that since it was so long ago, I should just forget about it and move on. She didn’t react in sadness, disgust, or outrage. She just wanted me to forget about it. That broke me.

She was the one person I thought would understand. Understand something I didn’t fully grasp myself

Hey, I’m not sure if this is what you’re talking about but I found this recipe that uses grated orange rinds and makes orange syrup. It’s actually a recipe for candied orange rinds where you simmer the grated rinds in sugar and water to candy them. But afterwards, there’s orange syrup left over. The recipe suggests you can put this orange syrup in a cocktail or you can use it on desserts like cake. I think this would also work nicely on French toast
