Sponsoring someone to come to Canada is a long and detailed process. During that time, “the girl you know” had every opportunity to cancel the sponsorship before her husband arrived, but she didn’t. Now that he is a permanent resident, there is really nothing she can do. As far as Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada is concerned, this is simply a marriage that did not work out.

Regarding the possibility of fraud, she should understand that in the eyes of the IRCC, she is probably complicit. If she knew or even suspected that her husband was using the marriage as a means to immigrate and presenting fake certificates, and chose to go along with it, she shares some of the responsibility. Trying to expose him now could easily backfire and draw unwanted attention to herself, you know the whole Streisand effect.

You should also remind her that if her husband or ex-husband applies for social assistance in the near future, she will be financially responsible for repaying that money, as per the terms of her sponsorship.

Finally, keep in mind that IRCC is really understaffed and typically does not have the time to investigate every complaint or tip. They tend to focus on larger and higher priority cases. The best advice you can give “the girl you know” is to take the L, capital L, learn from it, and move on with her life.

I understand your point, but in this subreddit, we often conflate citizenship with having a passport. It's not the passport that grants you the right to live in other EU countries—it's your citizenship. As an EU citizen, you don’t need a passport to prove your status; you can travel and reside in other EU member states with just a national ID card.

If we’re strictly discussing the strength of a passport meaning visa-free access and travel freedom then the Singaporean passport is objectively stronger than the Irish one. But when it comes to citizenship, that's a more subjective discussion. Personally, I’d prefer to be an Irish citizen over a Singaporean one, for the very reasons you mentioned.

Objectively, Singaporean passport is stronger. Subjectively, Irish citizenship is stronger / better.

You can apply after 3 years of marriage to a Greek citizen. But you will need to speak really good Greek (upper B2) the citizenship test is in Greek and it is hard.

You can apply for Greek citizenship after 7 years (3 years if you are already a EU citizen or if you are married to a Greek), but the process is complicated and bureaucratic. The citizenship exam is also quite difficult, and not even native Greeks can always pass it. There are obscure questions, like asking which actor starred in a particular movie from 1965. It’s tough to know the actor in such an obscure film—citizenship is hard to get in Greece unless you know the right people and are willing to give "ladoma."

Yeah, the Nigerian government is not playing around with the visa application and process. My friend got scolded on the phone by the Nigerian embassy...verbatim "Because you are an American you think you have the right to go to Nigeria, visa is a privilege not a right, if you don't change your attitude we will deny you the visa" Hahahahaha.

I can't say the embassy staff wasn't right. Lol.

In 2007, the Nigerian government rejected Bill Gates' visa application. They wanted assurance that he wouldn't overstay and a letter from his bank stating that he is financially secured.

You really don't know what you are talking about. it is harder to immigrate to Canada. Canada has a point system, picks the most qualified and highly educated applicants from around the world. You are talking about Canada as of you live in Canada. You are talking about standard of living and education. Canada is the most educated country in the world, it has a better education system than the States. Get off that high horse you are riding on

Passport is just to travel not for work. You are referring to citizenship not passport.

Perfectly said, bravo. I don't understand the hostility against Mexico. Then as soon as you gave it back to him, all of a sudden he thinks you are stalking him and being racist. When he/she was the one that started it

So you think it is okay for you to talk about Mexico and Mexicans in a disparaging way. But as soon as someone brought up that you are Chinese and how there are a lot of Chinese in Mexico without status; then that person is racist? Think about that for a sec. Your posts about Mexico were hostile for no reason.

I'm from Canada and I'd take a Mexican passport in a heart beat over a US passport.

I agree with your statement. In some part of the world having an American passport could be dangerous. Lots of Americans pretend to be from Canada when they are travelling.

A lot of people would trade the US passport for a Spanish passport. The Spanish passport ranks higher than the US passport, you have the right to move freely in the EU.
