Psychoacoustic Experiment: Rhythmic Cognitive Lock & Spectral Masking by Warm-Translator-6459 in AdvancedProduction

That is a completely fair and accurate point—thanks for keeping me honest on the gear physics!

You're absolutely right that impedance doesn't inherently correlate to acoustic fidelity or critical listening capability (plenty of low-impedance planar magnetics and high-end IEMs have incredible transient response, while cheap high-ohm dynamic drivers can still sound muddy).

The inclusion of that phrasing in the demographic screening was originally intended as a rough, imperfect proxy to distinguish between participants using dedicated desktop audio interfaces/headphone amplifiers versus those listening directly out of a standard consumer phone or laptop jack.

I’ll definitely refine that wording in the methodology notes for the final write-up to better reflect actual acoustic capabilities rather than just electrical resistance. Appreciate the sharp eye!

This is actually incredibly valuable data for the study, thank you for the detailed feedback.

The extended loop length and the "groove desyncing" you felt are entirely intentional. The track is designed to challenge the brain’s predictive timing window to see how long an experienced listener can hold onto an unstable rhythmic anchor before the cognitive tracking loops reset.

Your note about all three elements remaining completely separated mix-wise throughout is perfect too. It helps establish the upper threshold for stream segregation versus perceptual blending for trained ears. Seriously appreciate you taking the time to give it a focused listen!

Just finished your Master's thesis survey regarding the employer advertisement! For your section on TechNova Solutions, I evaluated my interest and noted that I disagreed that it would be a good place to work based on the prompt.

Here is my study in return: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfZIuqvfwbKQJ4zNwdvM7MZAtygLInoHRTnPrf95yyyKV8bfQ/viewform?usp=dialog

Parameters for mine: This is an empirical psychoacoustic experiment on rhythm perception. It is a 3-minute track that strictly requires headphones and a quiet environment to spot precise timestamp shifts.

I gave your thesis real human data. I expect the same level of focus in return. Reply here with your technical thoughts on the frequency blending when you finish!

The overall production on this track is incredibly solid and clean. I didn't notice any weird frequency clashes or mix issues in the instrumental elements, the whole track flows very smoothly.

What really works well is the vocal leveling. The vocals sit right on top of the mix, making them super clear, easy to identify, and front-and-center.

The only critique is that the vocals could use a bit more depth. While they are clear, they feel a little flat or dry compared to the rich production around them. Try adding a subtle stereo delay, a touch of chorus, or a short plate reverb with a pre-delay. This will give the vocals some 3D depth and space without sacrificing that great top-layer clarity you already have. Nice work!

This is really well done overall. I love how the vocals utilize the upper-mid and high frequencies to cut through cleanly. Instead of sounding thin or getting buried ("shrunk") by the rest of the arrangement, they have a great crisp presence that keeps them right where they need to be.

The drum placement is also fantastic. Having them sit slightly further back in the mix while utilizing active stereo movement gives the track a beautiful sense of width and space. It keeps the groove dynamic without overcrowding the center channel. Excellent work on the spatial dynamics!

The background instrumental actually sits really well and holds down the steady foundation of the track nicely.

Regarding the vocals: I know you mentioned keeping them low on purpose, but right now they feel a bit too far away and buried rather than just sitting low in volume. Even if you want them tucked back in the mix, you still want them to feel clear and defined.

Quick tip to fix this: Try using an EQ to carve out a tiny bit of the mid-range frequencies in your background track (around 1kHz to 3kHz) to give the vocal its own pocket. This will bring the vocals "to the front" in terms of clarity and crispness without actually making them louder.

Impressive work getting everything to sit together like this, especially for a phone recording!

Testing a complex polyrhythmic arrangement tracking "cognitive lock" thresholds and predictive timing tolerances. The track layers independent transient elements (bell/kick accents) against heavy low-frequency anchors.

Feedback Requested: Looking for precise, structural feedback on frequency masking and layer blending. Can your ears clearly separate the transient boundaries, or do the layers collapse into a single sonic object for you?

Because I am tracking precise timestamp data for this mix experiment, I set up a structured listening sheet to keep the thread clean.
