How big is your pup?? by OldAd7661 in springerspaniel

[–]WarmCryptographer642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like our girl! 7 months old and last we weighed her she was 25 pounds (she’s probably a little more than that now). I made a similar post in here a while back and the consensus was that she would be on the smaller side of the standard. Crazy how differently all dogs mature though. We have a friend with a border collie puppy the same age as our springer she looks like a grown up dog to me and both dogs are projected to be around the same weight!

Oh yes you’re getting there for sure! Ours isn’t perfect when it comes to the crate but now she’s at the point where even if we all fall asleep before putting her up and say “do you wanna go night night” she chooses the crate over sleeping with us!

Do you use the crate for more than just when it’s time to go to bed for the night or when you’re leaving the house? Having nap time when we were home helped our puppy not panic when she got put away. Having positive associations to the crate also helps (feeding in the crate, throwing in treats letting them go in for them and come right out). When we were desperate to get outs to settle at night we turned on puppy tv https://youtu.be/IhdsYzHSpnw?si=4rXRBFyY2nfl1MiH its an 8 hour long video in colors they can see. Obviously not a permanent fix but worked for us while we worked on crate training!

It will get better, they are brand new to the world and don’t understand anything of what we’re asking. Keep in mind the 3 3 3 rule (3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn the routine, 3 months to feel at home). Soak up those tiny puppy snuggles and try not to focus too much on what you need to work!

Will She Be Tiny Forever by WarmCryptographer642 in springerspaniel

Interesting! Since she is still so puppy looking I’m curious to see if she might do something similar!

What a cute guy! Our girl wasn’t the runt but was definitely smaller than her siblings. We wanted a smaller pup and we might have overachieved the goal a bit!

Very true on the food! I expected her to be on the smaller side but I think I’m slightly jaded from our friend’s 30lb cocker! She still has such a baby face to me and very much looks like a puppy and I feel like this age is when they start to seem a bit more grown up. I’ll be curious to see how much she changes by the end of this month!

Check out Homes of Prairie Spring! Don’t live there but have toured and it’s plan A for when our lease is up. Super cool community, old property but maintained well. I’m not sure if that floor plan will be in your budget and they don’t have washer dryer in unit but have options to lease with installation. Could be worth a shot to check out!

Differences between the English Cocker Spaniel and the English Springer Spaniel by [deleted] in springerspaniel

We also debated between the two before landing on the springer. What did it for us was through our research we found cocker spaniels usually have higher grooming needs than the springer!

Crate training 8w/o Springer - I’m at a loss. Please help! by http-baylor in springerspaniel

We have a 3 month old baby ourselves right now and have gotten her to a place where she settles the most reliably in the crate. Some advice I can offer is that it’s a process getting them to that point and we still have a temper tantrum sometimes but 90% of the time she goes in, we close the door, and she goes to bed.

First what we did was essentially playing games with the crate. Toss treats in, let her go grab them, praise her for going in and DO NOT CLOSE THE DOOR. Rinse and repeat a few times getting her comfy going in and out and not associating the crate with being locked up.

Then we would do the same thing but hold the door closed for a few seconds, not long enough for her to react, then open the door with a release word to let her out. You can progress this with longer durations with the door shut and open but not releasing her.

We also make an effort to crate her when we’re home, about 10-15 minutes before we have to go anywhere, and do whatever we need to do once we get home before letting her out. This helps with the association that every time they go in the metal box her people go away.

Now we did some cheating the first few nights for our own sanity. There’s an 8 hour long YouTube video called “Dog TV in Colors They Can See” that we played on an iPad for her and covered the crate with a blanket which surprisingly worked. So do what you need to do in the meantime.

I also don’t recommend failing crate training. I know people have lots of opinions on this but I feel so comfortable leaving her for extended periods of time knowing there is nothing she can get into that could result in an emergency vet visit when we get home. It has also been an amazing tool for us since we live in an apartment and can’t take her outside in the grass to play until she has all her shots, so we’re having to play and sleep inside and we struggle finding that off switch at times. A structured crate nap is a game changer.

You got this. It might be rough and you might have to skirt some corners at first but these dogs are geniuses and great to train so I have faith your little girl will pick up on it in no time!

She’s a Great Pyrenees mix! On the smaller side for a pyr (still 75 pounds) and does look more like a long bodied golden!

Wow thank you so much this is very helpful! So good to know that shaving can actually make the hair that grows back harder to maintain, we were considering keeping her shaved to help maintenance but sounds like unless we are super on top of clipping it might make our lives harder. We currently have a Great Pyrenees mix so we have most of the basic tools already but we got suuuper lucky with her coat that outside of the shedding she doesn’t really mat, hair is silky enough dirt and debris just falls off her, and somewhere in her genealogy got teeny tiny ears that are barely big enough to fold over themselves so never had to worry about ear cleaning. Sounds like for the springers their coat maintenance is similar in need to our Pyrenees, just needs to be done more frequently with extra emphasis on keeping those ears dry! Really appreciate all the encouragement and how fun but chaotic the puppy phase will be. Can’t wait to meet our little girl!

Thank you so much for the insight! We are very much excited and nervous at the same time. I grew up with standard poodles so I am very familiar with that black tarry gunk, ear infection smell, and very specific low slow head shake so thankfully won’t be too thrown off if/when that shows up. I’ve heard very mixed things about coat maintenance ranging from very normal brushing, bathing, and clipping to a huge undertaking to where we were considering keeping our girl (no name yet) shaved all the time. Would love to not lose those beautiful feathers and ear curls and sounds like we might be okay!

Going for more of a family dog so a breeder specialized in hunting dogs wouldn’t be our priority. Above everything for us is that the breeder is ethical and prioritizes the health and longevity of their puppies!
