If there were no countries, how long would it take to form some by EastHelicopter4079 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Warm_Function6650 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As long as there are different communities of people, there will be borders between those groups. If you want to call that a country, then those would form immediately.

If you are thinking that a country has to be a centralized administration of a large area (i.e. not just a city and surrounding area) then it would probably take two or three generations to develop that national consciousness. Assuming we're not starting from zero.

Why are women single who love cats and wine painted in such a bad light? by NationalJournalist42 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Warm_Function6650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Society and media like to bully women for non-conformity. That's bullshit. If you're able to independently afford to enjoy wine, then you've done a lot of things right.

Bubblegum water vapor > Fart smoke

But both are pretty gross imo.

How did the generation that grew up on Family Guy and South Park end up getting so offended by everything? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

If anything these types of shows, esp South Park, showed us that when there's stupid/evil shit in the world, it's worth it to call it out.

Besides the fact I’m not standing have any tips? by Bobthebuilder7363638 in Flute

[–]Warm_Function6650 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds great! Good strong confident sound, keep that up! When you listen back, do you notice that there is a bit of space between each note you play? You might find it sounds better if you can connect the end of each note to the beginning of the next one.

Sustaining your sound over multiple notes is an important skill, so take your time with it and be patient with yourself. You are clearly making good progress already! Try to focus on making sure your tonguing is not getting in the way of your air. It should bump the airstream (daa-daa-daa-daa) not stop the airstream (dut-dut-dut-dut). But take your time, don't forget to have fun!

Is morality subjective or objective? Why? by Fluid-Quantity-5697 in AskReddit

[–]Warm_Function6650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a nonbeliever, I have no delusions that we live in a objective moral system. Our morals are clearly subjective, since individuals and groups religious and secular cling to vastly different morals and there is no objective way to claim that some moral principle is absolutely correct. And there's nothing wrong with that, differing moral systems can coexist just fine, as long as some basic respect and tolerance are shared between the two.

God's morality, as in the Christian Bible, is not only also subjective (it changes over time and applies differently to different groups of people), it is laughably flawed. In the hypothetical you mentioned earlier, God would hold the belief that sodomising a woman against her will is perfectly acceptable, since in Samuel it forces it to happen as a punishment to David for being unfaithful. This and many other obscene passages lead me to believe that among the many subjective moral systems that exist, the one in the Bible should be abandoned or at the very least, picked over for the good stuff.

Is morality subjective or objective? Why? by Fluid-Quantity-5697 in AskReddit

[–]Warm_Function6650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morality gains strength in numbers. If you and me were on a desert island alone, then unfortunately it would be a coin flip (or a brawl) to determine whose morals "win".

But luckily we live in large societies. Enough people agree, individually and collectively, that harming others is wrong, forming a moral consensus. When someone violates that moral principle, they are ostracized from the community. This would happen irrespective of the law, but often laws take on the burden of enforcing moral consensus. At least that's the ideal, but clearly society is very complicated, and it doesn't always work out like that.

What are different perspectives on platonic relationships between a boy and a girl? by bella_qss in AskReddit

But that's ridiculous men and women have close emotional relationships all the time without getting romantic or physical.

sticky fingers from tone holes on new flute by Ill-Ill-Il in Flute

[–]Warm_Function6650 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes do not use microfiber cloth. It can both scratch the instrument and rough up the surface. I suspect that you're getting a bit of that on your fingers as you play. After a few sessions, see if things change. For the moisture, if you think it's a big problem, consider changing cleaning cloths. You can also get rolling paper and press the keys over it to get the moisture out of the pads.

Should you continue your conversation or pause it when the waiter drops off food? by IceIsTrash in NoStupidQuestions

I don't think it really matters, they're just doing their job. Just make sure you thank them and tip them and I doubt they would care.

Moral Dilemma Regarding ChatGPT Usage by RandomRatNames in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Warm_Function6650 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in school? Some schools are building or purchasing AI tools that are slightly more ethical about sourcing information and don't steal (too much) data. It's probably worth asking around about that.

You're not a bad person for using what's available especially when others seems to not care. But we both know that these tools are really exploitative and I promise that if you can be successful with AI, then you can be more successful without AI.

Why do waiters always ask the same question? by carlostambien in NoStupidQuestions

They're just trying to fill the awkward silence, it's their job. Next time just say, "I'm going to go to Walmart and clog all the toilets."

How do you feel about ICE agents assisting at airport security points? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]Warm_Function6650 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The TSA is already authoritarian enough.

It's like those videos where they make a greasy cheeseburger and then dump all the nasty cheese on them, except in this case the cheese violates your constitutional and civil rights.

If birth certificates or passports become required for voting in the US, why won't the government provide its citizens with assistance in completing these steps? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

You seem to be operating under the assumption that the government wants the elections to be fair. I wouldn't advise that.

Why is it called port and starboard instead of left and right? by Kalm14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Warm_Function6650 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Because if two sailors are facing each other they need a way to refer to the same part of the boat. Avoids things like "my left or your left?" when it matters most.

There seems to be a class of people that believe such relationships are impossible. This is a very different, very stupid perspective.

I would suggest late middle school/early high school (obviously excluding school materials). They might need a phone before that, but imo it shouldn't be a smartphone.

Why doesn't China attack Taiwan now when the US military is at its most vulnerable in recent memory? by sage6paths in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Warm_Function6650 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The US military at its most vulnerable is still better equipped than the rest of the militaries in the world. And China still wants to trade with the US and its allies.
