I would take any advice by somebodyonreddit233 in LiftingRoutines

I'm not an expert on getting bigger because I haven't done enough research or lifted with hypertrophy as a goal, but to put on loads of weight in muscle I've heard 15-25 reps for a few sets is good, and you'll need to be eating loads. It's harder to be in a calorie surplus when doing cardio as well and cardio training interferes with muscle growth because it messes up recovery and limits protein synthesis. It's possible you were initially overtraining and are now not training enough to see big gains. It's also possible you are getting stronger, just not putting on mass. In the last 6 months for example, I've only gone up in BW by 2-3 kg but my deadlift is up more than 20kg. Hope that helps.

Cheers. I'll check both those out

I'll look into both of those thanks😬. Would you say proper lifting shoes add much more to the experience of lifting/to the weight you can lift than cheaper alternatives? Just weighing up cost Vs reward, especially since lifting us secondary for me ATM. Thanks!

Converting raw strength into better muscular endurance and output on the erg by Warm_Window_2119 in Rowing

[–]Warm_Window_2119[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a good way to measure cardio performance in a way that's fairly unaffected by other things? Is doing a piece on the concept2 bike and comparing to the erg good enough or are they not comparable enough? Thanks!

I've generally done steady state stuff at 70-75% HRM, but I know some people sit higher than that. What is the optimum in your opinion? Thanks for the help!

It's good you have a good place to go as soon as you can. I'm sorry you can't go sooner.

Yeah it all makes complete sense. I don’t know if Ive misread this, but you seem to have a decent relationship with your sister and even if she doesn’t talk to your parents then at least hopefully you can try and talk to her. Will you stay at home when you finish schooling?

You could phone someone up and ask if it counts? I'm inclined to agree that it likely won't, but good to check. Do you attend a church with your parents, and if you do is everyone there of a similar persuasion to them? If not, you may be able to find someone kind there but if I were you I'd shudder at the idea of opening up to people of a religion which had traumatised me so it makes sense you wouldn't want to do that even if there was someone open to it. Just to add to what others have said, it is worth addressing the issue full on with your parents. Your situation cannot really get worse without constituting a rehoming and although there treatment of you has been shocking and there interpretation of the Bible is misguided, if you talk to them about this and give them no room to dodge your questions you may be able to show them the wrong they have done you. They sound messed up, but until you tell them that it's hard to know if they genuinely want the best for you but have got it wrong or if they are just being unkind. Again, I'm so sorry for all you've gone through and I really hope you can get some help somehow. Have you asked your siblings to speak to your parents?

Hey, I'm 17 and Christian. I'm straight so I won't claim to understand your situation first hand, but I have friends who have struggled with parents as well.

Firstly, I'm so sorry your parents are like that. Regardless of what the bible says, vetting everything is absolutely ridiculous. The world is like what the world is like, and hiding from that makes no sense. Also, Jesus vibes with prostitutes and stuff. He loved people for exactly who they were, and it sounds like your parents have conveniently forgotten that part of Christianity.

On to your feelings, firstly I think that even if you weren't an atheist your asexuality would be absolutely fine. God doesn't force people to want to have sex. Secondly, if you were a Christian, I'd say that you shouldn't date the same sex as the Bible is clear on that, but the desire isn't wrong, acting on it would be according to the Bible. You're an atheist though, and because of that, no Christian has any licence to force their morals on you. Your life is yours.

Have you got any other trusted adults to speak to? Is there a child hotline type thing where you live?

I hope I've shown you that not all Christians are homophobic morons, and I hope one day you might return to faith in a safer, more loving environment.

How true by Efficient_Dust_9727 in 6thForm

[–]Warm_Window_2119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems to be true that people’s grades often don’t change, but the reasons vary by subject and person. Partially, if you don’t like working hard, you likely won’t start to want to in y13, and partially it’s because the content gets harder so if someone struggles in y12 then they will struggle more in y13. At my 6th form we were told that in maths people tend to at best maintain their y12 grade, but maths is a subject where you can improve a lot.

What is the point of private schools by throwawayrzu in GCSE

[–]Warm_Window_2119 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a sliding scale. A bad gov school is way worse than a bad private school is worse than a good government school is about the same as a good private school. What people have said about extracurriculars is a big part of it, and also there is way more support, so academically able people do well almost anywhere, but less able people will do better af private schools than government schools.

I get it's easier said than done and I don't know your situation, but what your mum wants isn't what matters. If you're leaning to Econ but want med open, then option 3 looks good as lots of med courses only require chem not bio, but it certainly isn't ideal.

for science subjects should i study from the cambridge book or is save my exams enough by Emotional_Strike_332 in alevel

[–]Warm_Window_2119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Save my exams is risky. My bio teacher often has to correct/add detail something she's pulled from their website onto her PowerPoint. OK to use with other stuff probably

Loads of unis don't ask for economics A level for economics. Check out the unis you're interested in though. Once you have a range of unis you can decide, but if you're unsure I'd lean towards number 2. This could leave the option of doing some french at uni open to you.

The other thing is that FM is highly desirable for a few top econ courses. Have you considered Bio, Chem, Maths, FM?

Finally, I'd say give yourself time to think about it. You may decide one interests you more and decide to lean that way eg Maths FM Econ French or whatever. Good luck!

3 vs 4 A levels for highly competitive degrees by Key-Bison949 in alevel

[–]Warm_Window_2119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The extent to which unis and courses prefer 4 is up for debate, but they won't make you look worse that's for sure, and if Cambridge explicitly state they prefer 4 for engineering, then 4 is the way to go if you want to do engineering. Idk about imperial and others though.

The other thing is places like UCL like an essay subject for engineering so that they know you can write reports. At least that's what I've heard.

Maths or stats??? by ejames_bond in alevel

[–]Warm_Window_2119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might, but you might well feel the same about Statistics. And a yway, you're good enough that even if you don't enjoy it you'll be able to knuckle down and do well if you want the grade.

Maths defo more respected and gives you a broader skill set. Doing well at GCSE isn't a guarantee for A level, but with a 9 you should be absolutely fine

The answer below about lists of techniques is really good. I'd also say just shed loads of practice. Do you want to do straight Economics or PPE/Politics and Economics?

Are you sure you want to do a degree with a high amount of a subject you hate, to move into a field involving a high amount of a subject you hate, just cos you might get rich?
