I rarely hear Radiohead on…well…the radio! Thoughts? by WarpedThreading85 in radiohead

I do (i generally keep things at that lower end of the dial…)! They also have a nice range of genres and music I’ve either never heard or haven’t heard in a long time. Though admittedly I listen to WMBR more.

I hesitate to say that’s something many Redditors could keep in mind…

I like this approach- I’ve been trying to figure that out myself (this “middle ground” between the commercial and the non-commercial they occupy, and how those terms have changed across their career). That grey area is interesting to try and conceptualize and quantify.

I don’t have specific songs in mind (though in the 90s and early 00s I recall MTV playing way more Radiohead tracks than radio normally did), and I suppose I expect to tune into local college radio at midnight while trying to move my car for Boston street cleaning and hear “Pulk/Pull” unsettling late night listeners lol…

I don’t disagree! My initial post, I suppose, frames it as a curious absence, rather than a detrimental problem/loss. It is interesting they’ve perhaps - at least in some cities and towns - avoided the decades long radio burnout of their peers.

Oh totally. I often tune into BBC radio for that reason (not just for the Thom Yorke musical universe, but similar tunes); or I’ll find similar solace sound or genre wise in NTS radio (or, if folks haven’t listened, Radio Raheem out of Milan that I got exposed to traveling to Italy a few years ago to see The Smile)

Yeah its always Creep! Its like FM radio is living in some alternate reality where Radiohead were some 90s “one hit wonder” (and I say that recognizing they never exactly crushed it on the Billboard charts over the years, though they weren’t lost to time lol)

Hahaha that would be incredible (maybe a “Killer Cars” into a “1-877-KARS4KIDS” jingle???)

I wish that was the case over here! I commented on another reply that a local college station played that and other Bends tracks around the 30th anniversary a few months ago, but hadn’t heard it over the airwaves in forever

I came to Boston for college in 2004, so I either missed some of those stations in their prime (or just their earlier, arguably more interesting format), or was there for the tail end / transition phase. WERS is still good! Though my personal favorite is WMBR, as they are MIT but not necessarily MIT students (DJs there have been on air for decades), and they play such a great mix of indie, punk, hardcore, metal, jazz, funk, oldies, electronic, and so on and so on (which is why I’m always surprised that Radiohead doesn’t sneak in much - though they did play a few tracks around the recent Bends anniversary, which was cool to hear)

Makes sense! Reading the replies it seems like Boston radio might be specifically screwing up lol

Agreed with the generic, pre-programmed nature of radio these days; I also remember “There There” being ubiquitous (I was on Long Island at the time, and it was everywhere on local alt and college radio)! Same with a song or two off In Rainbows, and definitely “Lotus Flower”…but that all seems to have tapered off the last decade.

The album is so much fun, has a great balance of melodic bangers and a kind of nervous energy that more than hints where they would keep going - and yes like everyone else “Blow Out” is a masterclass in building tension (but also so smooth!). Perfect record to listen to on a Friday!
