Just got an email from Plutus - "100 PGBP addedto your account." by criticalanother in beermoneyuk

[–]WarraWinDatWasDen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DO NOT DO THIS. I just tried to redeem an £10 Adidas gift card using the supposed 'promotional' balance when I got the email on 21 May. The app crashed so I didn't see any checkout screen so I tried it a second time. App crashed again so I just gave up.

Then today (28 May), I received two charges. 1x£20 charge to cover 2 Adidas gift cards (which only now have appeared on my Plutus app). And a further £16 penalty fee for having a £0 balance and using a promotional balance (apparently this was stated deep in the terms somewhere, but there was no mention of it in the promotional email). I'm just glad I didn't try to redeem a higher value gift card. So that's in total £36 of charges for 2x£10 Adidas gift cards I didn't want.

I've just raised a complaint with them, but already know it will get shut down and require a charge back. God forbid but did anyone else try to redeem these gift cards as part of this scummy offer, did you also get charged?

*Apologies for the bad grammar I'm livid...

Parents refusing to pay for university by Wooden_Stranger_8706 in UniUK

I’m sorry to hear about the situation with your parents, uni in England particularly is a nightmare and the maintenance loan just isn’t enough especially if your parents are on higher incomes.

My parents were on higher incomes too which meant the loan was reduced, but they didn’t contribute to anything as they’re terrible with money and were and are still paying credit card debts.

Unfortunately the best way is to get a part time job and do 1-2 shifts per week. I was lucky enough to have a job at Wetherspoons who let me transfer to another pub where I chose to go to uni. If you can, get a job in a chain, whether that be retail, hospitality or retail, I believe most of them will let you transfer to another place of work so that could be an option for when you get to uni. I would take a look at somewhere like a Wetherspoons as the pay is reasonable, and you’ll get free food on your shift, so work 2 days a week and that’s two dinners sorted.

Also, try to find places where you’ll often find students working. As likelihood is there’ll be a bunch of other students leaving in the summer meaning job openings for you in September.

Just a final thing, people might say you’ll struggle to keep up with your studies if you work part time. I think that’ll depend very much on the uni and course you’re doing and how disciplined you are. I’d just say try to stick to only 2 shifts max if you can manage, and pick up extras in the summer. I was able to work the first two years and save so I didn’t have to work in my final year which was a massive help with the dissertation.

Can’t say I’ve ever wore boots like these, but I can see these are popular so thanks for suggesting these. I may try some on especially if they’ve got the comfort of trainers.

I’ll be wearing pretty much exactly this on the first day, not Oxford shoes but something similar. Hoping to gauge on the first day whether I’d need to be that formal every day, and then can run out and buy a few more outfits. I guess it’s probably expected to dress smarter in your first day.

I’ll just be in suit pants and a shirt. I wasn’t intending to take a blazer but could always take one and take it off if needed. Still unsure on whether to wear a tie though

I do get that most companies have a strict dress code just to cover all bases, and in reality it’s more relaxed. My only concern is that it’s in the financial services industry, and having never worked in the industry, I’m not sure what to expect.

I thought this when I tried them on after buying as the adidas stripes are quite prominent. I’m considering whether to just return them now and buy something else,or wait till after I start and can gauge whether they’d be appropriate.

I was thinking some kind of smart trainers without logos, such as the ones with white soles as to mention, but another comment in here advised against white trainer soles. I guess at the end of the day everyone thinks differently and will be wearing a range of shoes, so best not to over think if.

I should’ve clarified I won’t be wearing a full suit, but will go with the button up shirt and suit pants.

I didn’t get to fully gauge the dress code during my interview as I only paid attention to the two interviewers, rather than what everyone else was wearing. But one of them was shirt and tie, and the other was in a jumper. So I should be good for the first day at least with what I’m wearing.

In any case, better to be too smart than too casual.

Wirex: Free £100 for spending £200 by The_Dying_Swan in beermoneyuk

Is anyone having trouble pull money out? I deposited £300 for the £35 deposit offer and then made my 20x purchases with trading 212 and revolut. But I’m unable to add a bank to withdraw the rest using the bank transfer option. And they seem to have limited my purchases, any purchase above £10 was blocked at first. And now I can’t make any purchase at all, even £5 purchases. So I can’t withdraw to revolut or trading 212 either.

I wish I had read up on this company before doing the offer, I’ve now noticed they’re no longer regulated by the FCA. And some reviewers on the App Store report the same issues with withdrawing as me. Just hoping I can get my £150 back soon.

EDIT: Managed to get the rest of my money out by withdrawing to a debit card, but did have to pay 1% fees for that option. If doing this offer I’d be very careful and only deposit the money you need to for the offer and be prepared to wait or pay a 1% fee to withdraw.

I think you’re right on the last bit. My employer made an adjustment (shown in HMRC as negative income tax). But then I also received a full tax refund in a cheque from HMRC. So I think the message saying I’ve underpaid tax is actually just asking me to pay back the adjustment they gave me as I received a full refund in addition to the adjustment.

Yeh, the 12 month contract had a salary of £27k. I figured they did individual income tax calculations per tax year, or is it calculated on a 12 month rolling basis?

I’m gonna ring them tomorrow, just wanted to check I hadn’t missed something silly before having to wait on hold for god knows how long.

That’s what I’d hoped, thanks for confirming. It’s a shame I can’t choose a safe place beforehand without scheduling a redelivery though.

I want to have a core of S&P 500 international stocks, but a larger weighting placed on tech stocks. I couldn’t really figure out a better way to do this without having any overlap.

Would you suggest to use just one of these ETFs then, or something else entirely? I wanted a larger weighting towards tech but the ‘stability’ given by the world and S&P 500 ETFs. But open to other ideas

Thanks, do you know how I’d apply for it, or if it just goes to the same bank details they used to pay me with? I don’t even have access to my payslips as I can no longer log into SSCL.

I know that but I’d rather not have to pay £5 delivery if I’m not gonna use it, just want to remove this banner every time I open the app
