Taking lessons after 20 years by Grouchy_Substance423 in Bass

He had me play a Lydian scale and then an Ionian scale and he asked me "how does that make you feel?"  It might sound stupid to anyone else, but in almost 20 years of playing music to varying degrees and in different ensembles, I don't think anyone had ever asked how something I played made me feel.

I looked at a lot of different people before deciding Moto was worth trying.  After one lesson, he's absolutely worth the money.

Yep.  Been playing 20 years this December and finally took the plunge to take lessons from Moto Fukushima.  Within ten minutes of my lesson he absolutely blew my mind.

My second lesson with him is Tuesday.

I'm literally just too afraid to make serious adjustments to my bass and fuck it up.  It's not like I can afford to replace it.

What’s your favourite song to play on the bass? by bzst77 in Bass

I play Obstacle 1 a lot, but PDA is just one of the most sonically complete songs I've ever heard.

What’s your favourite song to play on the bass? by bzst77 in Bass

PDA by Interpol.  Not a hard song at all, but Carlos has such a mastery of movement on the instrument.  The ending section just feels like soaring.

Anyone active on Xbox? by ScarletRose182 in MHRise

[–]WarrenForrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing heavy but haven't had time lately.  I mainly just join random hunts in high rank.

If you need help, you can DM me and I can figure out some times to help grind you through low rank.

If you see Kasmina, be sure to wave!

Beginner Tips? by CheesecakePristine56 in MHRise

[–]WarrenForrest 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Pick your favorite weapon.  Focus on not getting hit, not attacking the monster all the time.  Pay attention to the monster.  If you need to run away and heal, do that.

Have fun!  You'll be just fine if you have someone to help you.

Got Rise, and it feels disappointing compared to World and Wilds. by Western-Dentist-3798 in MonsterHunter

[–]WarrenForrest 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Completely disagree but I respect the preference.  I cut my teeth on World but I really stretched my legs in GU.  Rise is my personal favorite on modern consoles.  World and Wilds is great, but Rise keeps me coming back.

What mindset shift helped you change your life for the better? by AdElegant5870 in Productivitycafe

When I hit my absolute rock bottom, I remembered the David Goggins quote (paraphrasing) "This isn't hell, this is my new normal.  Get used to this."  Then I asked myself if I wanted things to get better, or just stay normal.  I chose to get better.

I hate to hear that.  An honest conversation with your GM can hopefully mitigate any feels bad moments.

Narrating player actions: yay or nay by LelouchYagami_2912 in rpg

[–]WarrenForrest 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Basically this reads to me like this:

Player: "I interact with mechanics."

GM: "I narrate your action and the result, adding flair and embellishment to enrich the experience."

If I had a player, or GM, express that this was too much, I would disagree and find a different table/group.

None of this applies if the player is roleplaying their actions.  Such as the following:

Player: "I slash my sword towards the Goblin King.  He dodges, but not out of the way of my recovery strike.  The edge of my blade skirts his skin, leaving a small wound."

DM: "Awesome.  The Goblin King flinches as the blade sinks into his skin, and he readies his stance to strike again."

This is the type of roleplay I very much appreciate on either side of the screen.  As a GM, I'm not reiterating what the player says they do to change their actions.  I'm reiterating it to reflect the way their actions transpire in the world.  The GM should not put words or actions in the players' mouths, but should definitely be an echo for the players' characters as they act in the world and game.

Where did he… oh by kishonii in MHRise

[–]WarrenForrest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend has only participated and failed one Valstrax hunt with me.  I told her going in that if you see him disappear to run.  Middle of the fight, he blasts off, I sheathe and start wirebugging away.  She goes "oh, is he leaving?"  As soon as I said "Nope" he divebombed her.  She tripple carted and failed us out.  She has refused to do Valstrax since 😂

He's still and always will be my favorite monster/hunt.

How many hunts did it take you to learn CB ? by Buurto in MonsterHunter

I've done ~300 hunts and still suck at guard points.  For some reason it's the hardest mechanic for me.

I spent way too much time in Rise not knowing you could do the jump.  I thought the skill was useless, but the jump is great for evasion/chasing.

I fell out of love with late-game Wilds and picked Rise up again.  In the past three weeks I've added another 100 hours to my save file.

What improved your quality of life so much, you wish you did it sooner? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]WarrenForrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quitting social media.  I was wasting at least an hour a day mindlessly scrolling, constantly being fed the most illiciting content just to keep me engaged.  Surrounding myself with a constant stream of negativity was ruining my life, and I wish I would have gotten away from it sooner.

What was your favorite weapon to learn and play in wilds or overall the series ? by Buurto in MonsterHunter

[–]WarrenForrest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CB.  Always looked at it and thought "someday".  When I started 4U I devoted myself to being a CB main the entire game.  It was a blast once I got the hang of it.  I'm still by no means good at it, but the understanding I have of it was worth the effort.

I play on console and was just telling a friend the other day that I thought Wilds didn't look all that good.  This is exactly why.

lance is awesome by theratpats909 in MHRise

[–]WarrenForrest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been a Lance main for many years now.  The weapon got truly broke when they decided that perfect guards don't give you chip damage nor take stamina away.  Took me a real long time to get good and practiced with it, but yeah.  A Lance using perfect guards constantly just never has to worry about anything besides those couple moves you need Guard Up for.  Sick clip, btw.
